Bacterial Vaginosis or BV is a vaginal disease caused by bacterial overgrowth. The vagina is home to several strains of microbes, including good and bad bacteria. If the flora of the vagina is disturbed, it leads to mild infection. BV is characterized by a foul-smelling vaginal discharge and painful urination. Although BV is not a sexually transmitted disease, it increases the risk of other sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
Health experts are unsure what causes the disruptions on the vaginal flora. But excessive smoking, douching or having more than one sexual partner are factors that increase the risk of BV. While BV goes away on its own, it’s best to treat it as soon as you notice the symptoms. In today’s post, we are listing down five all-natural treatments for BV:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is extremely acidic. Using it as BV treatment, apple cider vinegar raises the vaginal acidity to inhibit bacterial growth. It leads to an environment where good bacteria can thrive. To use apple cider vinegar to treat BV, add two cups of the stuff to your bath water. Soak in the solution for at least 20 minutes. Pat dry the vaginal area after bathing. Continue the soak until you see an improvement.
Plain, natural yogurt contains millions of beneficial bacteria called lactobacillus. Lactobacillus helps prevent the overgrowth of bad bacteria. It also restores the pH of the vaginal area. To use yogurt as BV treatment, get a cotton ball and saturate it with yogurt. Apply the yogurt on the affected area and leave it on for at least an hour or two. Cleanse the vagina after. Repeat twice daily until you see an improvement.
Apart from applying yogurt topically, eat a couple cups of yogurt daily. This also helps re-balance the vagina’s flora.
3. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a powerful antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammation treatment. It kills germs on contact. It’s also traditionally used to treat BV. To use tea tree oil to treat BV, get a clean container. Add a couple of drops of tea tree oil and ¼ cup of warm water. Stir the solution well. Use it to rinse your vagina every day for at least three weeks. This solution kills bacteria and eliminates fishy vaginal discharge.
Another great treatment using tea tree oil is mixing a few drops in three cups of white vinegar. Pour the solution to your bath water and soak for at least 30 minutes. Do this every other day for one or two months until the symptoms disappear.
Garlic contains potent antibiotic, antibacterial and antiviral properties. It kills bacteria, fungi and viruses on contact. To treat BV using garlic, crush several cloves of garlic into a paste. Then, apply the paste directly to the affected area. Leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water after. Do this once daily until the symptoms disappear.
You can also eat raw garlic daily to treat BV. But if you can’t stand the taste, you can always take garlic tablets instead.
Milk is naturally rich in lactobacilli bacteria. Drinking milk daily helps restore the flora of the vagina. You can also add turmeric powder to milk and drink the mixture to alleviate BV symptoms. Another way to treat BV using milk is through a tampon. Dip the tampon in milk and insert it into the vagina. Leave the tampon for an hour or two then remove it. Do this once daily to relieve symptoms.
