It happens to the best of us, leg muscles suddenly cramping after an intensive workout. It’s one of the small annoyances of building a better, stronger body. Thankfully, you don’t have to grit your teeth and bear the pain. These all-natural remedies are sure to prevent yet another painful episode of leg cramping:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Cramping is usually caused by potassium deficiency. Apple cider vinegar – the raw, unfiltered kind – is loaded with this nutrient. The nutrients found in apple cider vinegar soothe muscle spasms and rebalance the fluids in the body. This prevents dehydration, another common cause of leg cramping.
To use apple cider vinegar to ease leg cramps, add a tablespoon in a glass of warm water. Drink the mixture once before working out. You can also add honey to sweeten the drink.
2. Yellow Mustard
Yellow mustard is a mainstay in the kitchen, but it’s an effective remedy for muscle cramps too. In fact, this popular condiment is so effective, it will soothe cramped muscles within minutes. Yellow mustard contains acetic acid, a compound that triggers the production of acetylcholine in the body. Acetylcholine is a type of neurotransmitter that signals the muscles to work. Acetylcholine also soothes pain and soreness caused by leg cramping.

3. Clove Oil
Just like apple cider vinegar, clove oil contains essential compounds that minimize muscle cramps. It gets better! Clove oil contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling, pain and soreness. This oil also helps numb the pain.
To use clove oil to relieve muscle cramps, rub it directly on the affected area. Use circular motions and firm pressure to massage the affected area. Repeat the process if needed.
4. Black Strap Molasses
If you’re prone to muscle cramps because you are either calcium or potassium deficient, take black strap molasses. This compound is rich in potassium and calcium. It reduces muscle spasms and minimizes swelling.
To use black strap molasses to treat muscle cramps, add a tablespoon of the stuff in a glass of warm milk or water. Mix very well and drink it before working out to prevent muscle cramps. You can also drink this solution to address calcium and potassium deficiency.
5. Rosemary
Just like yellow mustard, rosemary contains powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe inflamed muscles. It also reduces muscle soreness and pain. Rosemary also warms up the body. The heat expands the muscles, preventing tightness and spasms. Rosemary can even speed up muscle recovery and repair damaged tissues.
To use rosemary to treat leg cramps, boil several leaves in water. After boiling for 10 minutes, leave it to steep until room temperature.
Now, get a washcloth and saturate the fabric with the rosemary-infused water. Apply the washcloth on the affected area for at least 10 minutes. Once the pain is gone, follow it up with a cold compress. The changes in temperature will expand the muscles, eliminating cramping.
You can also take rosemary leaves as a tea to treat muscle cramps. Just add a spoonful of dried rosemary to a hot glass of water. Let the mixture steep for at least ten minutes then strain. Drink the solution as a tea twice per day for best results.
