Did you know that some of the most harmless looking beverages you love are shockingly unhealthy? Apart from having copious amount of sugar, these drinks are loaded with saturated fats, empty calories, and even harmful chemicals. In today’s post, we are listing down common beverages you must stop drinking right NOW:
1. Iced Tea
The next time you dine at your favorite restaurant, hold off the unlimited iced tea. Iced tea seems like the perfect drink on a very hot day, but this drink contains shockingly high amounts of sugar.
A typical glass of iced tea from your favorite brands packs at least 250 calories. Iced tea contains the same (or even more) amount of sugar found in sodas and fizzy drinks. Habitually drinking iced tea will cause weight gain, type-2 diabetes, and obesity. Instead of iced tea, try this alternative: add lime juice or lemon wedges on chilled water.
2. Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate being an unhealthy drink is old news. But how unhealthy is it? A regular “venti” of Starbuck’s hot chocolate contains a jaw-dropping 760 calories. It has the same amount of calories as a hearty dinner. Worse, the same serving of hot chocolate contains 22 grams of saturated fat and 85 grams of sugar. On top of that, same size serving of hot chocolate contains about 380 mg. of sodium! Imagine how many calories are added if you top your drink with marshmallows. Instead of indulging on hot chocolate, why not make your own at home using sugar-free, low-fat or low-calorie hot chocolate instead? These options contain less than 100 calories and a modest amount of sugar.
3. Flavored Water
No, flavored water is not good for you. All you need is plain water to quench your thirst and hydrate the body. Don’t be fooled by flavored waters’ claims of being healthier than water. Apart from packing at least 150 calories per serving, most flavored water contains 30 grams of added sugar. Worse, the vitamins in these drinks are fat-soluble. This makes the body unlikely to absorb these nutrients.
Instead of drinking flavored water, make your own detox water. Fill a water jug halfway with water then add slices of your favorite fruits. Keep the drink in the fridge overnight then enjoy the next day!
4. Energy Drinks
Energy drinks may boost mental alertness, but it’s as unhealthy as sodas. An average serving of energy drink contains at least 280 calories and 62 grams of sugar. Worse, this drink is loaded with stimulants like caffeine. It can cause hypertension, spike the blood sugar level and cause tremors.
According to the FDA, excessive consumption of energy drinks is fatal. In 2012 alone, there are at least 5 fatalities linked to drinking Monster Energy drink. The drink caused a wide range of serious health issues including loss of consciousness, heart attacks, psychotic episodes, stroke and irregular heartbeat.
Milkshakes are more similar to several slices of cakes than a drink as far as calorie content goes. A tall glass of milkshake packs between 500 to 700 calories. For instance, the PB&C Shake made by Cold Stone Creamery packs a staggering 2,010 calories and 131 grams of fat, 68 grams of which are from saturated fat. You could be eating a huge slab of chocolate cake and the calories you’ll consume won’t be anywhere near Stone Creamery’s PB&C Shake.
