Just like anything in life, our appetite is not static. Sometimes you feel famished for no reason and other times, you don’t have any appetite at all. The body goes through different changes at various times of the day. Usually, medical problems can affect the appetite. But there are times when mental and emotional issues disrupt the appetite too. In today’s post, we are listing down the most common nutritional issues and how to avoid them:
1. Lack of Appetite
Although decreased hunger is a common problem, not much is known about it. Some types of drugs can decrease the appetite and other times, certain illnesses lead to decreased hunger. To avoid having dietary issues because of lack of appetite, start eating smaller meals. You want to space out your mini-meals evenly throughout the day.
Avoid foods and drinks that can enhance the lack of hunger like coffee, tea, fatty foods and sugary foods. To stimulate the appetite, try light exercises such as walking or jogging.
2. Promote Weight Loss
There are many ways to adjust your diet to lose weight without depriving yourself. Start by reducing your consumption of processed foods. Abstain from processed meats, refined flours and foods with simple carbohydrates. Then, start substituting high-calorie foods with low-calorie alternatives. For instance, rather than having white rice, opt for brown rice instead.
Develop a high-protein, low-calorie diet then boost your consumption of green leafy vegetables. You can eat fruits but make sure to consume those with a low-glycemic index. Finally, avoid dairy products and opt for low-fat dairy products.
Are you prone to heartburn? Heartburn is a condition wherein stomach acid surge upwards into the esophagus, causing chest pain. Some types of foods can trigger this condition. These foods include chocolates, caffeinated drinks, fried and fatty foods. Spicy or overly seasoned foods may also trigger a heartburn.
Instead of eating three square meals, opt for five or six mini-meals evenly spaced out throughout the day. Minimizing your alcohol consumption also helps prevent heartburn. Finally, do not lie down minutes after eating. You want to stay upright for at least two hours after eating. Also, make it a habit to take an antacid one hour after every meal.
4. Sore Throat or Sore Mouth
Eating becomes more difficult if you have a sore throat or a mouth infection. If you can, avoid salty, overly-seasoned foods. Spicy or salty foods can irritate the inflamed tissues, causing more pain. Do not eat hot foods, eat them cold or lukewarm to prevent soreness.
If you have severe mouth infections, try not to eat whole foods for several days. Instead, puree vegetables or fruits using a food processor. This makes eating less painful. Drink soups and other liquids from a straw instead of using a spoon. This allows the liquid to come down smoothly into the throat. Finally, ask your doctor about antiseptic mouthwash you can use to speed up the healing process.
5. Mouth Dryness
Do you suffer from dry mouth? Mouth dryness makes eating difficult too. Usually, this condition is caused by a mouth infection, fever or certain medications. To resolve the issue, consume liquids instead of whole foods. Again, use a straw instead of a spoon when eating liquid foods. In addition, start adding sauces to dry foods to make them less hard to consume. You can use melted butter, broth or gravy to soften your food. Finally, never use mouthwashes with alcohol. Alcohol will aggravate your condition.
