5 Reasons to Avoid Refined Sugar

We all know refined sugar is hazardous to the health but how dangerous is table sugar? Refined or white sugar, is made from sucrose. Because it’s bleached and overly-processed, it contain zero nutritional value. It could trigger a sugar-addiction, leading to diabetes, obesity and cancer. Sugar can also alter our metabolic rate, causing all sorts of hormonal and metabolic disorders. In today’s post, we are listing down reasons why you should avoid refined sugar at all cost.

Highly Addictive

Did you know sugar is just as addictive as heroin? That’s right, consumption of sugar triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, just like heroin and meth. And the body can become addicted to the large dose of dopamine. Why? This chemical stimulates the reward center of the brain. That explains the blissful feeling you get when you eat a huge cake all by yourself at 3 in the morning.

And binging on sugary treats leads the body to crave for higher doses of dopamine. The more sugar you consume, the stronger the “high” you get from it. That’s why some people just can’t say no to sweets.

It’s Bad for the Teeth

You heard it time and again, but it’s worth repeating: sweets can rot your teeth! White sugar can break down the tooth’s enamel, causing oral problems such as cavities, halitosis, and gum disease. Sugar is bad for the teeth because oral bacteria “feeds” on sugar. Bacteria love easy to digest energy like sugar. And if microbes feed on sugar, they will spread throughout the mouth at a much faster rate.

Sugar is Toxic to the Liver

Yes, eating too many high-sugar foods could lead to liver disease. As the sugar enters the bloodstream, it is broken down into two types of simple sugar: glucose and fructose. Glucose is found in all living cells, while fructose is found in fruits. Because fructose is not native to our cells, we need various enzymes to break it down. These enzymes are produced by the liver.

Unfortunately, the liver can only metabolize a small amount of fructose. The liver turns fructose into glycogen. When the liver is full of glycogen, it overloads the organ, forcing the liver to store fat within itself. This causes fatty liver.

Eating fruits every day is not problematic at all. But eating a lot of foods rich in processed sugar is dangerous. The fat in the liver triggers a chain of negative reactions in the body, including Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, a metabolic disorder.

Can Cause Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is a physiological condition wherein the body cells no longer respond to the hormone insulin. This condition is a precursor to other metabolic disorders as well as type 2 diabetes.

Insulin breaks down stored fat by burning glucose. Too much glucose is toxic to the blood. It could lead to diabetes complications such as blindness. When the cells no longer respond to insulin, glucose is no longer processed by the body. This causes the blood sugar level to shoot up, leading to various diseases. Eventually, insulin resistance will progress to diabetes. The sustained high sugar level could also lead to cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

Will Cause Cancer

Eating sugary treats every day can cause cancer. According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. The disease is characterized by the uncontrollable growth of malignant cells. And insulin can regulate the growth of insulin cells. If the body has grown resistant to this hormone, the malignant cells can proliferate undisturbed in the body!

Scientists found that people with elevated blood sugar level are more vulnerable to cancer than other people. The excessive sugar in their diet causes inflammation, another precursor to cancer.
