6 Stress-Busting Foods

Stress is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases. When stressed out, the body will generate adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol and adrenaline are hormones that trigger the brain’s fight or flight response. Cortisol is important in keeping yourself alert and out of trouble. But too much stress hormones overwork the brain and the heart. That’s why too much stress results in various ailments. To keep the stress level low, kick back and relax by eating these foods:

Milk

There is a reason why kids feel sleepy after drinking a glass of milk. Apart from inducing sleep, warm milk contains tryptophan. This compound increases the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a hormone that uplifts mood. It also soothes the mind and triggers sleepiness. The calcium in milk also induces calmness. Most types of dairy products triggers drowsiness.

Wild Salmon

Surprisingly, salmon can help you relax. It’s high in omega-3 fatty acids. Essential fatty acids keeps the heart strong and the muscles pliable. The right level of omega-3 fatty acids inhibits adrenaline and cortisol from elevating in high stress situations. These hormones are the culprit behind feelings of anxiety, stress or panic. Sometimes, people prone to panic attacks are just low in essential fatty acids. Next time you feel anxiety creeping in, have a yummy slice of salmon with veggies. It’ll work better than any anti-anxiety pill.

Avocados

Here’s another reason to love guacamole! Avocados are rich in healthy fats. These beneficial fats release pent up stress and calm the nerves. Avocados are also packed with glutathione. This essential nutrient prevent the absorption of unhealthy fats. These fats cause oxidative stress. Avocados also contain the highest amount of folate than any other fruit. So if you’re pregnant, nosh on avocados! It’s good for the baby.

Do note that because of its high fat content, avocado isn’t exactly kind to the waistline. So nosh on it without any trimmings. Also, control your portions. You can add several slices of avocados to your favorite salads. You can also add a couple of avocado slices on sandwiches or burgers.

Berries

Think of berries as little pops of energy. All kinds of berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. All these compounds combat stress and protect from various diseases. A study conducted by German scientists found that people who eat more berries are able to solve hard math problems easily compared to those who were not given berries. The same study also suggest that people fed with foods rich in vitamin C are less stressed out. They have lower blood pressure and less cortisol in the body.

Oysters

Fresh oysters are an acquired taste, but they’re packed with beneficial nutrients that releases pent up stress. Just six oysters is enough to calm the nerves. They’re full of zinc and iron. Oysters are also great if you’re trying to lose weight. It’s rich in high quality protein and low in calories.

Soup

Soup is called soul food because it’s hearty, healthy and it helps the mind relax. Chicken soups contain anti-inflammatory compounds. These compounds protect the body from infection. They also strengthen the immune system. Using fresh, wholesome ingredients adds to the soups’ health benefits. For instance, spicy ingredients like capsicum or garlic strengthen the nervous system. It also soothes frayed nerves and calms an overactive brain.
