Bronchitis is a type of infection of the bronchial tubes, the passageway of air into the lungs. It’s caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi due to viral or bacterial infection or any particle that irritate the bronchial tubes. Bronchitis is classified into two types: acute and chronic.
Acute Bronchitis: This condition starts with a cough with or without the production of expectorated mucus. Acute bronchitis usually occurs during the course of a viral illness such as flu or common cold.
Chronic Bronchitis: This condition is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. Chronic bronchitis starts by productive cough that spans for more than three months. The condition will come and go because of the recurrent injury sustained by the bronchi. Chronic bronchitis is caused by cigarette smoking, exposure to extremely polluted air, and chemical lung irritants.
Bronchitis Signs and Symptoms
The most common signs of bronchitis is hacking cough that persists for five days or more. Other symptoms include low-grade fever, tenderness in the chest area when coughing and production ofclear, yellow or green phlegm. Breathlessness, wheezing, and fatigue could also point to bronchitis. If you cough up reddish or brownish phlegm, your symptoms start to worsen and you have very high fever, call for medical attention immediately.
All-Natural Treatment for Bronchitis
Ginger is traditionally used to treat common colds and flu. It’s also an effective treatment for bronchitis thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties. Ginger helps keep swelling down, calm inflammation, and prevent viruses and bacteria from making the infection worse.
To use ginger to treat bronchitis, ground fresh ginger together with cinnamon and cloves and add the mixture to hot water. Let the ingredients steep for several minutes and mix very well. Drink it a couple of times each day.
Garlic has potent antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic, and antibiotic properties. It’s a great no-frills, natural treatment for acute bronchitis. Just take peeled, fresh cloves of garlic and chop it. Add the chopped garlic in a cooking bowl with milk (about a full glass). Boil the whole thing for five minutes and then drink it before going to bed every night until symptoms start to disappear.
Eucalyptus oil helps loosen and soften mucus that obstructs the airways of the lungs. It alsohas antibacterial properties that hasten the healing process. Boil water and transfer in a bowl. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil and get a towel. Cover the bowl and your head with the towel so steam won’t escape and inhale deeply.
You can also apply eucalyptus oil topically to treat acute bronchitis. Just spread several drops of the oil all over your chest. The oil will loosen mucus and expel it easily.
Manuka honey is renowned for its healing properties. It’s also a natural antibacterial and antiviral agent. Honey has been used since ancient times to boost the immune system and treat various respiratory problems, including bronchitis. Instead of adding regular sugar, sweeten your drinks using manuka honey. You can also take honey with a warm glass of lemon water to help loosen chest tightness, expel mucus, and soothe inflamed throat.
