Suffering from cracked, dry, or flaky lips? An emollient lip balm could bring moisture back to dehydrated kissers! Most skincare brands offer lip treatments and balms but you can make one right at home.

Even better, DIY lip balms are cheaper and more effective in hydrating the lips. Why? Store-bought lip balms contain menthol, salicylic acid, and other chemicals that dry out lips even more. Even if you religiously apply lip balm, you end up with flaky lips. With DIY lip balms, you choose what ingredients to use, making them chemical-free and mild! Have fun in the kitchen with these super-hydrating lip balm recipes:

Tangerine and Peppermint Lip Balm

Peppermint gives a tingly sensation on the lips while beeswax, Shea butter, and extra virgin coconut oil plump up and moisturize the lips.

You will need:

2 teaspoon unbleached, cosmetic-grade beeswax pastilles
1 teaspoon raw, organic Shea butter
3 teaspoon extra virgin coconut oil
Peppermint and tangerine oil
lip balm tins (either recycle used up lip balm tins or get decorative ones at your local craft store)

In a heated sauce pan, add the beeswax pastilles and melt over low heat. Incorporate the Shea butter. Remove the pot from the heat and add 20 drops of peppermint and 10 drops of tangerine essential oil. You may add more if you want. Transfer the mixture to the decorative tins and leave to cool.

Sweet Almond and Lavender Lip Balm

Sweet almond oil is renowned for its moisturizing properties while lavender is an aromatherapy staple. Together, they make for an excellent lip hydrator.

You will need:

¼ cup sweet almond oil
¼ cup raw, organic Shea butter or Cocoa butter
2 tablespoon unbleached beeswax pastilles or 2 ½ tablespoon of soy wax
Lavender essential oil
1 teaspoon beet root powder for color
Lip balm tins

You can either use a double boiler or a microwave to melt the wax. Mix equal parts of sweet almond oil and Shea or Cocoa butter in a measuring cup or in a double boiler. Microwave the mixture for one to two minutes until the wax melts. Add the unbleached beeswax pastilles or soy wax. Again, microwave the whole thing. Hold the cup carefully. With a stainless spoon, mix the rest of the ingredients.

Add 10 to 20 drops of essential oil and small amount of beet root powder. Carefully transfer the mixture to the lip balm tins and leave to cool.

Honey and Coconut Lip Balm

Coconut oil deeply hydrates while honey locks in moisture. This fabulous lip balm recipe is a well-loved classic!

You will need:

1 tablespoon unbleached beeswax pastilles
1 tablespoon extra-virgin coconut oil
1 teaspoon organic raw honey
2 vitamin E capsule
Lip balm tins

Using a double boiler, melt the beeswax pastilles. Once the wax is melted, add the coconut oil and raw honey. Blend everything together and then add the contents of the vitamin E capsules. Pour the mixture into the lip balm tins and leave to cool.
