Chills Without Fever are Caused by Different Conditions

The only times a normal person experience chills are due to extreme cold or high fever. However, there are cases wherein individuals experience chills without any of these perceivable reasons. What could be the cause of chills without fever?

What are Chills?

Chills refer to the rapid contraction and relaxation of muscles as the body attempts to produce heat from within. Goosebumps—or the erection of fine hairs all over the body—often coincides with chills.

It’s common for chills to be followed up by fever if the body is fighting off an infection. However, if the chills do not coincide with fever, then it could indicate the following conditions:

Reaction to Prescription Drugs

If you’re under any medication—and the dosage might’ve been incorrect—it could lead to chills without fever. These chills could occur each time the medication is taken incorrectly. Such kind of chills could also include other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and drug drowsiness.


When the hemoglobin level in the body drops, it could also cause chills without fever. Hemoglobin is a type of protein found in red blood cells. Other symptoms associated to anemia include fatigue, pale complexion, dizziness, headaches, and shortness of breath.


A severe dip in blood sugar level could also lead to chills without fever. Although hypoglycemia is not a condition by itself, it’s a symptom of a certain health problem — the most common being diabetes.

Other symptoms that may coincide with chills without fever due to hyperglycemia include profuse sweating, anxiety, heart palpitations, and a tingling sensation in the mouth.

Bladder Infection

One of the most common causes of chills without fever is bladder infection. Bladder infection is common in women. If you experienced chills without fever followed up by a burning sensation while urinating, a strong-smelling urine, and frequent urination, you might be suffering from bladder infection. In such cases, we recommend contacting your doctor right away.


If the body is not getting enough nutrients, it could also cause muscle spasms. In rare cases, malnutrition causes chills without fever followed by depression, severe fatigue, lightheadedness, and extreme weight loss. In such cases, a doctor will have to assess the patient and determine the right diet and treatment for malnutrition.

Home Treatment for Chills Without Fever

Assuming that your chills are not caused by any serious medical condition, you can turn to different home remedies to treat the chills.

Depending on the severity of the chills, wrap yourself up in thick blankets and eat something healthy on a regular basis. We recommend keeping a muesli or power bar handy to ease the chills.

Take your daily recommended dose of vitamin B. Vitamin B not only prevents the occurrence of chills without fever, it could also increase your energy and keep the joints healthy.

Soothe the body by drinking warm water. This keeps you hydrated while also warming up the body. In addition, you can also run a warm bath. A warm bath also works great in relaxing the muscles and stabilizing heat in the body.
