Dyspepsia – also known as indigestion – is an ailment caused by impaired food processing by the digestive system. Symptoms of indigestion include nausea, belching, upper abdominal pain, stomach cramps, and heartburn. This condition is often caused by gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis. Indigestion is also indicative of peptic ulcer and occasionally, stomach cancer.

Suffering bouts of indigestion? You don’t have to take medications to ease dyspepsia. Just look around your kitchen and you will find several natural remedies for indigestion! Below are kitchen staples that do double-duty as dyspepsia treatment:

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although apple cider vinegar is mildly acidic, it alkalinizes the stomach. Taking a teaspoon of raw, organic apple cider vinegar should help ease stomach pains and soothe indigestion. You can also mix apple cider vinegar with a little raw honey to boost its potency.

Fennel Seeds

For those who are suffering from indigestion triggered by spicy or fatty foods, grind fennel seeds and mix it with water. Strain the liquid and take the solution as tea. Fennel seeds contain volatile oils that regulate stomach gas and reduce nausea. Drink the tonic twice per day for long-lasting relief from dyspepsia.


Ginger is a kitchen staple with a long list of health benefits. It helps regulate the level of enzymes in the digestive system and promotes better digestion. This is a common spice used in baked products, Mediterranean dishes, and desserts! It’s also one of the most effective treatments for indigestion. Cinnamon helps ease the digestive process and soothe stomach cramps. This herb also reduces flatulence, nausea, and bloating.

To use cinnamon as a treatment for indigestion, add half a teaspoon cinnamon powder to a cup of boiling water. Let the solution steep for 10 minutes before drinking.
