CoolSculpting refers to a non-invasive weight loss procedure with principles based on a 1970 scientific study. The procedure involves freezing the excess fat cells, causing them to die and gradually eliminated from the body. The extreme cold is used to shape, contour and add definition to specific parts of the body.

CoolSculpting is based on a study that analyzed the fat cells of Russian children during the 70s. Doctors were baffled while children who frequently sucked on Popsicles lost fat in their cheeks. They could not figure out how healthy kids were able to lose the fat deposits in the cheeks despite their young age. After several observations and tests, doctors discovered that the Russian kids’ habit of sucking popsicle sticks was the culprit behind the anomaly. It seems that the coldness from the frozen treat killed the fat cells within the cheeks, causing the cheekbones to protrude. This process was called cryolipolysis. It literally means freezing the fat to reduce minor accumulations.

How CoolSculpting Works

The procedure starts with large or small sized paddle-like applicators attached to a hose to generate cold. A gel pad is applied on the skin to protect it from cold burns. Then, the CoolSculpting device is powered up and the applicators are pulled upon the area being treated. The two panels will remain on the area being treated throughout the procedure.

Upon contact with the skin, the applicators will subject parts of the body to extreme cold. You will feel a stinging, aching and cramping sensation. This is normal and should lessen as you progress with the treatment. Then, the affected area becomes numb. A few minutes before the treatment is done, the applicators are removed. You will be given several minutes to recover from the pain. Then, you will move forward to the procedure. The therapist will massage the area to boost blood flow. At this point, the affected area becomes stiff or inflamed. Then, the discomforts will subside and you may resume normal activity after treatment.

What Can You Expect From the Treatment?

The treatment will take a full hour each. However, if you’re having two areas treated at once, it’ll take two hours to complete the procedure. For example, love handles are not treated at the same time. So if you want both sides of your midsection to be treated, you need to get a two-hour treatment.

You won’t see instant results. You’ll have to complete several sessions before noticing any results from the treatment. We recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes when getting CoolSculpting done to minimize pain after treatment.

Disadvantages of CoolSculpting

There are Side Effects

Although the company behind CoolSculpting prides itself for obtaining a clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration, this does not mean the treatment is 100% safe. Those who underwent CoolSculpting complained of the following side effects: bruised skin, redness, irritated or inflamed skin. These symptoms will go away on their own. The treatment will not affect the muscles or skin tissue permanently.
