Recovering meth addicts are often dehydrated, their livers are damaged from drug abuse. Consume More Healthy Fats

Recovering meth addicts need beneficial fats and lots of it! Beneficial fats like monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids will detox the liver and improve brain functions. These healthy fats also repair damaged tissues and restore normal body processes. Get beneficial fats from healthy sources such as grains, oily fish, nuts and fat-free dairy products.

Limit your consumption of processed foods, fizzy drinks, and greasy foods. Fast foods and fried foods are packed with saturated fats. Saturated fats are linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and other chronic diseases.

Foods with Complex Carbohydrates

Most recovering meth addicts think kicking the habit will lead to weight gain. To a certain extent, this is true. When you no longer spend day and night awake and paranoid, you make better lifestyle and food choices. Ultimately, you will start gaining weight. Depending on the kinds of food you eat, the weight gain may help you achieve normal weight or lead to excess weight.

The key to staying slim is to choose low-calorie foods. Carbohydrates aren’t bad as long as they are from healthy sources. Wholesome, unprocessed, grains like oats, bran, beans, and cereals are packed with complex carbohydrates. Unlike simple carbs, complex carbs take longer for the body to process. This minimizes the chances of binge eating or overeating. Because complex carbs are packed with fiber, you’ll feel fuller for longer.

Most recovering addicts mistake food craving with drug craving. By eating foods rich in healthy carbs and fiber, it minimizes the chances of a relapse.

Eat High-Fiber Foods

Choose unprocessed foods rich in fiber too. Fiber promotes weight loss and cuts the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It also keeps the brain and heart strong. Fiber also stabilizes the blood sugar level while lowering cholesterol level in the body. It promotes better digestion and detoxifies the colon too! The best sources of fiber are oats, bran, green leafy vegetables and fruits.

Vitamin-Rich Foods

Finally, consume foods that are packed with vitamins C, B12, and B5. Foods rich in these vitamins repair damaged tissues and promote better function of the nervous system. These nutrients allow the body to heal from the damage caused by methamphetamine. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system while vitamin B12 restore proper nerve function. Vitamin B5 alleviates stress and anxiety during meth withdrawal.

Foods to Avoid

If you’re a recovering meth addict, minimize your consumption of dairy products, and eggs. These foods could elevate cholesterol level in the blood. Cut back on sugar-laden foods to minimize the risk of a relapse. Finally, avoid foods that are loaded with empty calories, saturated fats, and simple carbohydrates. These foods will trigger binge eating and sugar crashes.
