At some point in your life, your parents made you take vitamin supplements everyday. Although vitamin supplements are great for kids who are not meeting their dietary requirements of vitamins and minerals, they’re not really a critical part of a child’s nutrition. Nothing beats getting all the nutrients we need from the food we eat. But there are cases wherein multivitamins are needed to keep kids healthy.
Which Kids Don’t Need Vitamin Supplements?
If a child gets his required dietary allowances of milk and dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and protein and whole grains, he does not need to take vitamins every day. He’s already getting all the nutrients he needs from the food he eats.
Which Kids Need Vitamin Supplements?
Most kids are picky eaters. They will not eat their greens nor finish their meals most of the time. If your kids aren’t eating enough healthy foods, then that could be the right time to boost his nutrition through vitamin supplements.
If your child does not eat healthy, fresh and whole foods, you need to make him take his vitamins. Picky eaters, active kids, and kids on a vegetarian diet are also recommended to take multivitamins. Little ones that love their fizzy drinks or junk foods are also required to take vitamin supplements.
Kids with certain types of health problems such as asthma or digestive problems should also take vitamin supplements. The same thing goes for kids with extreme allergies for certain types of foods. However, be sure to talk to your doctor or pediatrician before starting your child on any medication or multivitamin.
The Risks of Taking Vitamin Supplements in Children
Taking vitamin supplements may seem harmless especially since these are meant to augment your child’s nutrition. However, it does come with certain risks. For instance, giving excessive dose of some vitamins and minerals to a child can be toxic.
Kids who are in some type of medication should only take vitamin supplements required by their doctors. Some compounds in vitamin supplements could interact with the medication.
What to Look For in Vitamin Supplements for Your Kids
Choose the One Recommended by Your Doctor
Again, don’t just give your kids popular multivitamins, talk to your doctor and get recommendations. Kids have different needs and their state of health will come into play in getting the right vitamin supplements. A vitamin supplement may great for most children, but it might not be the best choice for your kids.
It Should Provide the Right Amount of Nutrients
Choose vitamin supplements that do not provide more than 100% of your kid’s daily value of vitamins and minerals. Anything more than that could be toxic and anything less could be inefficient in boosting your child’s health.
Choose One That’s Designed for Your Kid’s Age
One of the most important things to consider when choosing the right vitamin supplement for your kids is getting one that’s designed for their age group. Don’t expect multivitamins for kids 0 to 5 to work on your 9 or 10 year old child.
