Did you know that some drinks contain so many calories; they rival decadent desserts and supersized junk foods? The worst thing about drinking these beverages is that they show up on your belly and thighs very quickly. If you want to lose weight or maintain a slender physique, never drink any of these fattening beverages:
Beer is the most fattening of all alcoholic beverages, bar none. Just a glass of beer contains up to 250 calories. This might not sound like a lot but if you’ve down three or four bottles on a normal Saturday night, you could be drinking up to a thousand calories in one sitting! Even so-called “light beers” contain more than 100 calories per bottle. So for consumers, the label “light” is quite misleading indeed.
2. Fruit Smoothies
Smoothies are deemed as healthy beverages that’s why most dieters make their own smoothies to boost their weight loss efforts. But the fact is, some “healthy” smoothies are laden with at least 350 calories! And the worst offenders of all are smoothies from your local cafes and smoothie bars. These smoothie stores churn out drinks that are so high in calories, they are essentially liquid ice cream! They use full-fat milk and lots of sugars too, making these drinks extremely fattening.
To avoid going overboard on the calories, make your own smoothies using low-calorie ingredients. Adding vegetables and cutting back on dairy and sugars is one way to keep the smoothies relatively low-calorie.
3. Mixed Alcoholic Drinks
Cocktails are fun, flavored alcoholic beverages made up of artificial and natural fruit flavors. These drinks are popular among those who either hate beer and hard liquor and those who are looking for something light and “low in calorie.” But are these drinks really low in calorie?
The quick answer is no, cocktails are high in calories too. Some even contain more than 800 calories per serving! Now imagine ordering these drinks by the pitcher and you’ll quickly take in more than a thousand calories in just one sitting.
These drinks are often flavored with ingredients that are either high in fat or in sugars. For instance, pina colada, which is a popular cocktail, contains a staggering 880 calories per 16 ounces. Daiquiris and margaritas are extremely high in sugars because they are not made from real fruit. They are packed with fructose corn syrup, syrups, and other sweetening ingredients on top of the artificial flavorings! Pairing these drinks with popular bar entrees or appetizers and you’ll quickly double or even triple your caloric intake!
4. Fresh Orange Juice
Most people start their day with a tall glass of OJ. Orange juice is loaded with a long list of essential nutrients. This household staple is naturally high in vitamin C and often fortified with important minerals too. But did you know that good ol’ OJ is actually fattening compared to other fruit juices?
Just an 8-ounce serving of unsweetened orange juice packs 105 calories per day. This might not look much but if you keep drinking orange juice every morning for a year, you’d be drinking 38,325 calories! Worse, some OJ brands add artificial flavors and sweeteners to the juice, making the finished product even more of a health hazard.
