Ever feel lethargic several minutes after eating certain types of food? You’re not alone. This is true especially if you love high sugar, high calorie or high-fat foods. The fact is, some types of food trigger body processes that lead to mid-morning crashes and afternoon slumps. And to energize the body, make sure you stick to a healthy diet. In today’s post, we are listing down the foods that leech energy from the body:

It’s tempting to finish a meal with a slice of cake or relax at your favorite café with a frappe and a slice of cake but don’t. Cake is extremely high in sugar and calories! It can drain your energy too. To understand why some foods lead to sluggishness, you need to know how the body processes sugars.

Basically, the body is addicted to sugar. If you eat high sugar food, the body converts sugar into energy. Within minutes of eating such food, you feel alert, energized. This is caused by a spike on your blood sugar level. But the blood sugar level don’t stay elevated for long. Once it drops down to its normal level, the body isn’t able to recover quickly. This leads to mid-morning crashes and afternoon slumps! Eventually, the cake you ate at lunch will drain your energy for the rest of the day.

Peanut Butter

It’s shocking that a healthy food item is actually draining the life out of you, but it’s true. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Peanut butter is healthy in small amounts, but it’s high in sugar and calories. If you don’t mind your portions, eating too much peanut butter will lead to fatigue, sluggishness and weight gain.

High Sugar Fruits

Some types of fruits contain copious amounts of fructose – a fruit-based sugar. And of all fruits, mangoes, lychees, pineapples and figs contain the highest sugar content. You don’t have to eliminate these fruits from your diet. You just have to limit the amount of fruits you eat. The same thing goes if you add them to smoothies or juices.

Greasy Foods

Fried foods or fatty foods contain fat. And it takes more time to break down and process fat during digestion. Various organs have to secrete different enzymes just to process fat from the food you ate. As the body works harder to digest fat, it burns off more energy, leaving you with very little energy to work with.

Ever wonder why you feel so tired after drinking alcoholic beverages? Alcohol slows down the central nervous system. And when the brain is not working at its best, it’s unable to regulate body processes. This leaves you feeling exhausted after spending the night drinking. Worse, you wake up dehydrated. And when you’re dehydrated, you feel even more tired.

White Bread and White Pasta

White bread and white pasta have a lot of things in common. They are made with refined flour, they are high in simple carbs and they are fattening. They will also drain the life out of you!

How? Simple carbs are converted into sugar by the body. And when it’s processed as sugar, these foods elevate the blood sugar level. Again, when the blood sugar level is elevated, it’ll eventually drop down at some point in the day. And when it does, you will feel lethargic, sluggish.
