If you work out, do you prefer working out alone (complete with headphones) or do you like working out in classes or making gym dates with friends?

Although both approaches have their own benefits and drawbacks as far as staying fit goes, you could be missing out on great fitness benefits if you don’t at least try each approach to see which suits you best. Today, we are listing down the respective benefits and drawbacks of solo or group workouts.

Going Solo

Benefits

If you are the type who prefers to work out alone, then you probably couldn’t imagine enrolling in a gym class or even go on gym dates with your friends. One of the benefits of going solo when working out is that your whole attention is focused on your body. You can customize your routine, achieve your own fitness goals, and eventually hone your needs to achieve the shape you want.

Drawbacks

Working out alone is great if you want to focus on your shape but because there’s no one to mix things up, it’s easy to get stuck doing the same routine over and over again. If you rely on your own when working out, there’s no one keeping tabs on your progress and no one’s accountable except yourself.

Going on Gym Dates

Benefits

Working out with a gym buddy not only helps you stay motivated, you can also count on your friend to track your progress, come up with different routines, and even help you achieve your weight goal faster! One study shows that people who exercise with their fitness friends tend to perform better than those who do not have anyone to work out with. Working out with a friend also helps prevent boredom and even overcomes the dreaded fitness “plateau.”

Drawbacks

When you’re working out with a friend, you tend to subconsciously match his performance. Your brain tricks you into thinking that you’re doing your best when you’re not. Working out with a fitness buddy may also minimize your workout time out because you will add more time for breaks. This slows down your progress; you could be burning off more calories if you maximize your time in the gym.

Going on Fitness Classes

Benefits

Enrolling in fitness classes is perfect for those who prefer to work out on a consistent schedule. Your workout buddy might miss another gym date but your fitness class will go on as scheduled!

Going on fitness classes is also a great way to get to know other people, share stories, and even trade secret workout routines.

Drawbacks

If you’re the kind who thrives on different routines to get the results you need, then enrolling in fitness class might not be the best choice. Gym classes have little to no room for customization. Although you are bound to burn off calories in one class, you could burn more if you have a workout plan that’s customized for your body.

Which is The Best Choice for You?

The best workout will depend on your own temperament and the kind of results you expect. But to erase all doubts, try all three every now and then to find out which type of approach yields the best results.
