Colloidal silver consist of silver specks suspended in a liquid. It’s made with silver colloids, ionic silver and silver proteins. Colloidal silver is also formulated with silver salts, a popular compound used by doctors in the early 20th century. However, production of colloidal silver ceased in 1940. During the 90s, colloidal silver was marketed as a “cure-all” treatment. It’s been marketed as an alternative treatment for a wide range of health maladies. It’s also used in homeopathic remedies. But there are no scientific findings that support its health benefits.

Colloidal silver comes in various forms. It’s often sold as a liquid supplement, as ointment or in nasal spray form. Although colloidal silver is considered safe, some studies suggest that silver compounds accumulate in the organs.

Traditionally, colloidal silver is used to treat gonorrhea, epilepsy and colds in the mid-20th century. It’s also used as eye drops or as antiseptic. Colloidal silver is also a disinfecting agent and an antibiotic agent. As such, colloidal silver was used to treat various infections. But when antibiotic drugs were developed, most doctors ceased prescribing colloidal silver.

Benefits of Colloidal Silver

Boosts the Immune System

Colloidal silver made quite the comeback because of renewed interest in its health benefits. Alternative health practitioners believe that colloidal silver helps strengthen and stimulate the immune system. It works by killing viruses, fungi and bacteria on contact. Although it’s not an essential mineral and it does not serve any physiological functions, supporters of colloidal silver swear by the stuff.

Fights Infections

Colloidal silver contains antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic properties. During the 1900s, it was traditionally used to treat infections. Some experts believe that colloidal silver prevents everything from urinary tract infections to ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Cancer Treatment

Some studies suggest that colloidal silver could be used to treat certain types of cancer. This conclusion is based on the molecular composition of colloidal silver. Colloidal silver is made of cancer-fighting particles that are small enough to penetrate the cells. It increases cell permeability and destroys cancer cells from the inside.

Pet Treatment

Colloidal silver is also used to treat various ailments that plague cats and dogs. In fact, colloidal silver is an effective treatment to the dreaded canine parvo. This virus is often treated with antibiotics. But some pet owners believe colloidal silver is much effective in stopping the infection right in its tracks. Canine parvo has a high mortality rate. 80% of dogs diagnosed with canine parvo die within a few weeks of treatment.

Factors to Consider

The US Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on companies that sell this substance for misleading health claims.

Using colloidal silver often could lead to a condition called argyria. This occurs when the skin, eyes and nails take on a blue-gray discoloration. Although argyria is not a serious health problem, the discoloration is permanent.

Before taking colloidal silver to treat any ailment, consult your doctor first. Educate yourself about the risks and benefits involved in using colloidal silver. Start by searching online and gathering facts about the efficacy of colloidal silver.
