Lichen Sclerosus is a skin disease with an unknown cause. This condition is characterized by white patches of skin in certain areas of the body. The skin in areas where white patches occurred becomes thinner than normal skin and more prone to scarring. While lichen sclerosus occurs in various parts of the body, it often develops on the skin of the vulva in women and the foreskin of the penis in men.

This condition is common among post-menopausal women and uncircumcised men. If left untreated, lichen sclerosus could lead to various complications.

Signs and symptoms of lichen sclerosus include mild to severe itching, discomfort within the genital area and white spots all over the skin. The spots become blotchy and rough. The affected area becomes prone to bruising and tearing. In severe cases, lichen sclerosus could lead to ulcerated lesions and skin infection.

Unfortunately, lichen sclerosus has no known cause. Medical reports point to the lack of certain sex hormones as the cause of this condition. Some believe that an overactive immune system could be the culprit. Lichen sclerosus isn’t infectious nor transferred sexually.

Lichen sclerosus is usually treated with corticosteroid ointments. Just apply the cream on the affected area daily until the symptoms go away on their own. Unless lichen sclerosus occurs in the genital area, you don’t have to undergo treatment. It will go away on its own. In severe cases, immune-modulating medications and ultraviolet light treatment are used to treat this condition.

You can also turn to herbal remedies to heal lichen sclerosus and eliminate symptoms. Below are the best herbal remedies against this skin disease:

Also known as pot marigold, calendula is an herb used to treat viral, fungal and bacterial infections. It kills harmful microbes on contact. It also fights infections and accelerate healing. Calendula is harvested as a medicinal oil. It contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents, effectively healing wounds. It also helps shrink tumors too! Just dab the oil on the affected area to dry out and heal all types of skin disease including lichen sclerosus.

Plantain is a crop that’s similar to bananas. They are often used in cooking, but they work as a treatment for various skin diseases too. Plantain will soothe redness and prevent itchiness. Use plantain regularly to eliminate itchiness brought on by lichen sclerosus.

Comfrey refers to a group of plants that belong to the genus Symphytum. This herb grows in damp, grassy lands and is native to Britain and Ireland. Comfrey is used as a medicinal herb. It promotes tissue healing and faster recovery. The herb is called the “knit bone” because it has the ability to heal damaged cells together. As such, it makes an excellent remedy for lichen sclerosus. Comfrey kills germs that could lead to skin infection. It also works fast to relieve all symptoms associated with lichen sclerosus – including itchiness and inflammation.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is known in the beauty industry as an all-natural astringent. The extract of this flowering plant will calm down irritated skin without over-drying. It will kill harmful microbes that cause inflammation. It also protects from all types of infections.

Red Clover

Red clover belongs to a species of clover native to Western Asia, northwest Africa and Europe. Just like calendula oil, red clover contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents. It will heal wounds and ulcerated lesions. It promotes faster healing and soothes irritated skin. Red clover has phytoestrogen effects too. It’s an excellent remedy for lichen in menopausal women
