The connection might not be obvious, but a good night’s sleep can actually boost weight loss. Ideally, you want to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Unfortunately, 40% of Americans only get less than 6 hours of sleep every night.

Researchers at Columbia University found that individuals who get less than 7 hours of sleep every night gain more weight. Over time, those who cannot get enough shut eye struggle to lose weight compared to those who are not sleep deprived. So apart from dieting and exercising, hitting the sack early is an important part of slimming down. No More Midnight Snacking

When you’re awake when you should be sleeping, you tend to “graze.” This leads you to consume more calories than you can burn off. Eventually, this results in weight gain. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that sleep-deprived participants gained more weight as opposed to their well-rested counterparts. The reason? Participants who sleep from 4AM to 8AM consumed at least 550 calories more from midnight snacking!

Torching More Calories

That’s right, you can sleep and still burn off fat! A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that well-rested individuals burn off calories 5% faster than their sleep-deprived counterparts. And when they’re awake, those who got enough shut eye burned off 20% more calories after a meal versus those who slept late!

Promotes Fat Loss

Even if you watch what you eat like a hawk, you’d end up gaining weight if you don’t give your body the kind of rest it needs. If you’ve been sleeping late, the body struggles to burn off fat. Researchers from the University of Chicago observed two groups of participants for an experiment. One group got 8 and a half hours of sleep. The second group only got five and half. They ate the same amount of calories. While participants from both groups lost weight, those who are well-rested lost more fat.

You Make Better Food Choices

There is a reason why you crave fattening food when you didn’t get enough sleep. When you’re tired or hungry, you tend to buy unhealthy foods when out shopping. An experiment published in the Obesity Journal noted how men who are sleep deprived bought almost 1,300 calories more in food than those who got enough sleep.

Improved Portion Control

Apart from eating low carbohydrates foods, you need to control your portions to lose weight. Unfortunately, people who are sleep deprived tend to consume more calories. This was the result of a study conducted by a team of Swedish scientists. During their experiment, those who did not get enough sleep added 35 additional calories by snacking compared to their well-rested counterparts.

Forget about feeling sluggish or sleepy. When you get enough sleep, your mind is sharp and alert. And when you’re alert, you are focused on your goals. In this case, the goal is to lose weight. You don’t make bad food choices because your inhibitions aren’t lowered.
