Have you ever tried to zip a pair of your pants, only to realize you can no longer get the zipper up?  Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror, after putting on a few pounds, and wonder “Am I overweight?”  If you answered yes to either of those questions, you are certainly not alone.  Many people find themselves in those type of situations and seek help to lose weight.  The following paragraphs will discuss weight loss in general, assist you to get a general idea if you are overweight, as well as help you to determine if you need to lose weight.

The first thing you must remember is that there is no perfect formula to predict an ideal body weight with 100 percent accuracy.  This is because we all have so many different body types, bone structures, and frame sizes.  However, there are formulas used to determine, with some degree of accuracy, your estimated ideal body weight.  The most popular formulas include:

  • Reverse BMI formula
  • The Hamwi formula
  • A Healthier formula

Your estimated ideal weight will differ depending on which formula is used for calculation.   The formula used most often is the BMI formula, closely followed by the Hamwi formula.

If you determine that you are overweight, and you need help to lose weight, there are many ways to achieve weight loss.  The best weight loss programs will always include eating a healthy diet, as well as regular activity and exercise.  Drinking a fair amount of water, as opposed to drinking sugary juices or soft drinks, can also help to lose weight.

Weight loss is not always easy to accomplish.  Many overweight people seek out weight loss plans that will be the easiest to follow.  It is important to remember that effective diet plans, the best weight loss plans, will require work and dedication.  If a diet plan claims to provide easy and fast weight loss, it’s best to avoid them.  These diets often fail to help to lose weight, and are usually a waste of the dieter’s time and money.

Choosing the right weight loss plan can often depend on how much weight you need to lose.  Those who are considered to be extremely overweight, or obese, may need to see a doctor to help to lose weight.  The doctor may suggest a modified diet, activity and exercise, as well as prescription diet pills to help lose weight.  However, prescription medication is usually only recommended after most other weight loss plans have failed on their own.

Calculating your ideal body weight and loosing the extra weight, can both be difficult tasks.  However, there is help available.  A nutritionist, or even your family doctor can make suggestions to help to lose weight.  Follow your doctor’s advice, be consistent, and have patience.  Keep a positive attitude and you are much more likely to achieve your weight loss goals.
