The American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish at least twice per week to reduce the risk factors of heart disease. Health experts believe that unsaturated fats in fish can lower the risk of deaths related to heart problems. Recent studies show that there is a link between an increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and a healthy heart. It goes without saying that eating fish will benefit the heart but how exactly? In today’s post, we reveal how a diet rich in oily fish can reduce your risk of dying from heart disease:

Regulates the Heartbeat

Oily fish contains eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA and docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. These are animal-based omega-3 fatty acids that keep the heart healthy.

EPA and DHA regulate the heartbeat and prevent cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat leads to a variety of heart problems because it weakens the heart tissues. Unfortunately, this condition has zero symptoms so it’s extremely hard to detect. A diet rich in fish should help regulate the heartbeat and keep the heart healthy.

Prevents Blood Clots

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk for heart disease by preventing blood clots from forming within the arterial wall. Blood clotting occurs when the red blood cells start clumping together, changing the blood from a liquid into a gel. Blood clotting is a useful body response because it prevents blood loss. But when a blood clot forms inside a vein, it can cause heart attack, stroke and deep vein thrombosis.

EPA and DHA reduce blood clotting and fatty deposits within the vein. When the arterial wall is free from blockages, blood can flow freely into the organs.

Antiatherosclerotic is a type of heart ailment caused by stiff or thick arterial wall. Usually, this condition is caused by dead cells and fatty deposits sticking together into the inner lining of the veins. When the veins and arteries become stiff, they are less efficient in withstanding high blood pressure. The blood won’t flow as freely because of the inflexible arterial wall. Eventually, stiff arterial wall leads to heart attack or sudden cardiac death.

When the body is invaded by a pathogen, the immune system will trigger the release of white blood cells. The white blood cells will attack the irritant to contain it.

According to Deepak Bhatt, M.D. of the American Heart Association, a heart attack is often caused by the buildup of fatty plaque in the blood vessels. When the body perceives these cholesterol deposits as a “foreign object,” the immune system will start releasing white blood cells into the blood. This will lead to an inflammation. As the arteries become inflamed, the entire circulatory system is affected. This increases the risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids help “melt” fatty deposits within the arterial wall, sweeping the arteries clean of blockages that may cause heart disease.
