Age spots – also known as liver spots – are blemishes that appear on the hands, arms, and shoulders. These blemishes are caused by excessive exposure to sunlight. The ultraviolet rays of the sun trigger the overproduction of melanin in the skin. When the skin produces more melanin, brown spots start appearing all over the body.
Unfortunately, once age spots set in, they are extremely hard to remove. The key to reducing age spots is to prevent sun exposure. But for existing age spots, these remedies are proven to fade out blemishes without causing skin damage:
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apples. Because this vinegar packs a lot of fruit acids, it helps reduce the appearance of age spots. You can either drink diluted apple cider vinegar or apply the vinegar directly on the age spots. You can use apple cider vinegar to fade out blemishes on its own or mixed with a little orange juice for enhanced results.

Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a powerful exfoliant. It is loaded with vitamin C that sloughs off dead skin cells, eliminate age spots, while promoting cell repair. The vitamin C in lemon juice also triggers the production of collagen to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Lemon juice also bleaches the skin, evening out the skin tone. Just apply freshly squeezed lemon juice on the affected area, leave the juice on for at least 10 minutes then rinse with tepid water. Do this for a month for best results.
Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe vera juice contains soothing ingredients that heal burns, fade scars, and reduce the appearance of age spots. The gel from aloe vera also stimulates the growth of new skin cells, eliminates dead skin cells to promote a rejuvenated appearance. Just rub the aloe vera gel directly on the affected area and massage it until fully absorbed.
Yogurt
Yogurt contains lactic acid that gently sloughs off dead skin cells. You can use yogurt as a spot treatment or as a nourishing face mask. Yogurt will even out the skin tone, rejuvenate the skin, and eliminate blemishes gradually. Just apply the yogurt on its own or mixed with a little raw honey on the affected area. Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with tepid water. Do this for two months to fade out persistent age spots.
Retinol
Retinol is one powerful anti-aging product. It is a concentrated form of vitamin A that speed up cell turnover. This is an excellent treatment for those prone to age spots. Retinol eliminates age spots before they form so the blemishes never reach their full maturation. However, regular application of retinol causes skin sensitivity. That’s why you have to wear sunscreen whenever you are heading out to avoid new blemishes from forming!
Exfoliation
We cannot stress this enough, the key to clear, blemish-free skin is regular exfoliation. Exfoliation eliminates the topmost layer of the skin, unveiling the fresh, baby-smooth skin underneath. Regular exfoliation fades out all kinds of blemishes, including age spots, acne scars, and pimple scars.
