The family that gains weight together can certainly lose weight together. Studies show than the average American diet consists of excessive sugar, sodium, and refined ingredients. A diet that consists of junk foods and processed foods paired with a sedentary lifestyle is the leading cause of obesity in the US.

It’s one thing to motivate yourself to lose weight and stay fit. It’s another when you want to encourage the rest of the household to do the same. The good news is, there are many ways to help your spouse and kids get into the program and stay fit! In today’s post, we are listing down helpful tips to lose weight as a family:

Plan Your Weight Loss Strategy

It’s important to have a sit down with the whole family and let them know the importance of losing weight and eating healthy. This goes especially if you have kids as old as 10 to 13 years old. Kids are unable to comprehend the need to eat healthily. On top of that, they are not exactly enthusiastic about eating their greens. You can encourage weight loss by drawing out a meal plan and listing down activities you can do together as a family.

Choosing Healthy Foods

Choosing healthy foods start at grocery shopping. Instead of the usual chips, canned foods, bread and sugary cereals for the family, go for whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains and lean meat. Rather than buy fattening seasonings and condiments like butter mayo, or ketchup, try filling your basket with herbs, spices, and other healthy seasonings. You can use spices and herbs to experiment with different flavors and whip tasty, healthy dishes.

Purge the Fridge

After buying healthy foods, purge your fridge. Remove any foods that are unhealthy such as junk food, cured meats, sugary desserts etc. At first, it’ll be hard to let go of these foods especially if you are prone to grazing too. But easy access to fattening foods will defeat the purpose of eating healthy to begin with. Instead of junk and processed foods, replace them with fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks for the kids such as trail mix, nuts, etc.

Utilize Healthy Cooking Methods

The average American diet is loaded with saturated fat, sodium and sugar. All these things can be avoided by trying out healthier cooking methods. For example, instead of frying or grilling your food, consider steaming, broiling or stir-frying. Rather than use copious amounts of vegetable oil, add a little oil derived from healthier sources like olive, canola or even safflower oil. Instead of dousing food with salt, soy sauce, and other unhealthy seasonings, experiment with different combinations of spices and herbs!

Eat Meals Together

Every meal is an opportunity to bond with the whole family. Don’t let food distract the whole family from bonding. Take this moment as a time to share stories, trade banters and get to know your kids more. Always eat meals together and remove any distractions that aren’t conducive to mindful eating. Don’t turn on the TV or allow mobile phones at the table.

Exercise Together

Exercising together doesn’t have to be an intensely grueling affair. Go out for walks, take bike rides or take the dog out to the local park.
