How to Make Your Own (Healthy) Baked Potato Chips in 4 Easy Steps

Who doesn’t love a bag of potato chips? There’s just something about this beloved snack that’s comforting. Unfortunately, your average store-bought potato chips are not only high in salt and calories; it’s also loaded with artery-clogging trans-fat.

If you just can’t give up on potato chips, we highly recommend making your own baked version! Homemade potato chips are just as delicious as any store-bought chips, but they are also lower in calories and salt. Even better, homemade baked potato chips are also more affordable! Ready to start baking? Here’s a classic baked potato chips recipe you can make at home:

You will need:

5 medium-sized potatoes
1 teaspoon olive oil or canola oil
A sharp knife
Salt and pepper
Powdered seasoning
Baking pan
Aluminum foil
Non-stick oil spray


Step 1: Prep the Potatoes

Start by washing the potatoes thoroughly. If the potatoes are dirty, get a clean, old toothbrush and gently lift the dirt away. Once the potatoes are clean, you can either slice them with skin on or peel them before slicing thinly. We recommend keeping the peels on for added fiber.

As for the slices, it must be almost paper thin or about one-eighth and one-sixteenth inches thick. You can experiment with various thickness but if you really want the chips to be extra crunchy, make sure the slices are thin. After slicing the potatoes, transfer them to a clean bowl.

Step 2: Oil ‘Em Up

Add a teaspoon of olive oil or canola oil in the bowl of sliced potatoes and toss. All potato slices must be coated with the oil. You can adjust the amount of oil if needed but go with about a teaspoon at a time. If you see oil pooling at the bottom of the bowl, you added too much oil.

Step 3: Bake the Potatoes

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Get a baking pan and line it with aluminum foil. Spray the foil with an even coating of non-stick oil spray to prevent burning.

Now, carefully lay the potato slices in a single layer on the baking sheet. Do not overlap the potato chips or they will stick together. Pop the baking pan in the oven and set the timer for 20 minutes. This is not the total cooking time of the chips. Throughout the baking process keep an eye on the chips.

You can tell if the chips are done by checking the edges. If the edges are starting to curl up, then you can remove it from the oven. You can also cook it a little more for preferred doneness. After the chips are done, remove the baking pan from the oven and leave the chips to cool for an hour.

Step 4: Season

At this point, you can add your seasonings. Add a dash of salt and pepper as well as your favorite powdered seasoning. You can either go for garlic powder, cheese powder, Old Bay seasoning, etc. Once the chips have cooled and they’ve taken on a crunchy texture, then they are ready to serve!
