We cannot deny the fabulous impact of lush lashes. Some beauties can even get away with just a few coats of mascara and a lip gloss! But clumpy mascara leaves the lashes looking like dead spider legs and that is not a good look! Of course, removing your full face of makeup is not an option if you are dealing with clumpy mascara. To prevent spider lashes, keep these practical tips in mind:
Check the Expiration Date
One of the most common causes of spider lashes is goopy mascara. Fresh mascara usually has a more liquid or mousse-y texture while mascaras past their expiration date take on a goopier, hard to manage texture. To avoid messing your makeup, check the expiration date of your mascara before applying it. Using old mascaras increase your risk of a bacterial infection too. Ideally, you want to replace a mascara 6 months after using it, regardless if you finished the tube or not.

Remove All Traces of Makeup
Before applying the mascara, make sure there is no trace of makeup on the lashes. Waterproof eye makeup and water resistant mascaras are notoriously hard to remove. You might not see it, but using the wrong makeup remover could leave traces of old mascara all over the lashes! So when you apply a fresh coat of mascara, you get clumps.
To make sure your lashes are free from leftover makeup, remove waterproof eye makeup with an oil-based makeup remover at night. Wash your face thoroughly to remove all traces of makeup.
Curl Your Lashes
One of the most common causes of thinning lashes is improper mascara application. Applying mascara before curling the lashes cause damage to the hair follicles, leading to breakage. It can also cause unsightly clumps! Contrary to popular notion, curling after applying mascara will not preserve the curl at all.
The trick is to curl your lashes first then applying several coats of mascara quickly. The mascara will hold the curl, boosting thickness while giving you a wide-eyed look.
Remove the Excess
Piling on makeup will result in an overdone face. The same thing can be said when it comes to mascara application. Piling on products too thickly will cause the mascara to clump, causing unsightly blobs all over the lashes!
A great way to reduce excess mascara is to wipe the want on the mouth of the tube each time you pull out. This way, the excess product will be taken off the wand. If this does not work, get a tissue and wipe the excess product gently then apply the mascara as you normally would.
Work Quickly
Most mascara gives you enough playtime to build up the product. That does not mean you should take your sweet time applying mascara! You have to move quickly to coat the lashes with the product without the clumps.
Mascara sets the longer it is exposed to air. If you do not move quickly, the product will start to set as you coat your lashes. The continuous piling on of fresh mascara over the set mascara will cause clumping!
