How to Wake Up Fast

If you’re like the typical American you don’t bound out of bed in the morning eager to take on the challenges of the day. It’s more likely that you crawl out of bed after tossing your alarm clock across the room in frustration. Being tired when you wake up in the morning is no laughing matter. Chances are you struggle to get dressed with your eyes half closed and your brain in a fog-like state. For some unfortunate people, this early morning “fogginess” can take several hours to clear. If you’re feeling hopelessly tired in the morning, here are some tips to help you wake up fast so you can get on with the day.

If you’re one of those unfortunate souls that can’t seem to function until noon, you may be suffering from a condition known as sleep inertia. With sleep inertia, the portion of the brain responsible for initiating wakefulness is slow to do its job. Unfortunately, when the brain doesn’t kick into gear it can reduce your ability to think clearly which can be a problem at work.

If you suffer from sleep inertia, it may help to reschedule your hours so you go to work later in the day. If you can’t wake up fast, you should also schedule important tasks that require a lot of brain power for the afternoon when you’re fully awake. Keep the morning hours as simple as possible to give your brain time to fully charge up.

Another way to wake up fast in the morning is to establish a set sleep schedule and stick with it each day. By doing this, you program your body to become alert at a specific time. Once your body becomes aware that you’re getting up at the same time each day, it will automatically wake up at that time and will recharge itself faster. The only disadvantage is you can’t sleep in on weekends.

Another trick to help you wake up fast is to flood your bedroom with light as soon as you awaken. When your retina senses light, it signals the pineal gland to decrease melatonin production, the hormone that promotes sleep. Take the time to stand by the window in the morning and stare into the rising sun for a few minutes. Even better, open the window and breathe in the cool morning air. These stimuli can help to revive you when you’re feeling tired in the morning. Did you know you can buy something called a wake-up light that mimics the effects of the sun rising? These can be purchased on the internet.

To wake up fast, you need to eat a nutritionally sound, high protein breakfast. Skip the sweet cereal and go with eggs and oatmeal to give you maximum energy. Although you shouldn’t overdose on caffeine, one cup of coffee may help to wake you up. Having breakfast in the morning serves two purposes. It gives you energy to get through the morning and also gives you something to look forward to when you wake up. Having a reason to get out of bed makes it easier to get going in the morning.

Lastly, if you have time, take a quick walk outdoors as soon as you awaken. The movement and fresh air are guaranteed to help you wake up fast if you’re feeling tired. Once you get going, you’ll feel refreshed and energized.
