You may have used turmeric once or twice while you are cooking but don’t really have a clue on what’s it all about. However, turmeric has proven to be one of the best spices that you can use not only in cooking but for its overall health benefits.

Turmeric is a peppery, bitter and warm flavor with a scent that resembles orange and ginger. It is a spice best used in cooking curry and is distinguished by its mustard bright yellow color. It came from the rot of curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin with dark orange colored flesh. It has been used as an anti-inflammatory in China and India in terms of medicine. Turmeric is traditionally called Indian saffron but because of the yellow-orange color, it has also been used in different items and healing remedies.

There are many ways that you can benefit from turmeric. If consumed regularly, you can benefit from its healing properties and might just prevent you from visiting your doctor’s office. Here are some of the best benefits that you can get from turmeric.

It has been known that turmeric can help prevent prostate cancer and stop/destroy cancer cells. According to research, the active components found in this spice helps by protecting the body from radiation-induced tumors. They also prevent the cell formation of T-cell leukemia, breast and colon carcinomas. Besides protecting the body from cancer, it is also proven to be a good anti-inflammatory remedy. If you have arthritis, turmeric consumption can treat osteoarthritis as well as rheumatoid arthritis. It also has antioxidant properties that helps destroy the free radicals in the body. When turmeric is consumed on a regular basis, it will help in relief of joint pains and inflammation. Diabetes can also be treated with turmeric. This is done by keeping the insulin levels in moderation. It also improves the glucose levels and helps increase the effect of the medications used to treat diabetes. However, turmeric combined with strong medications can lead to hypoglycemia. So make sure to consult your physician first before taking this with your diet.

The substance known as lipopolysaccharide can be found in turmeric. This substance plays a big role in our body’s immune system by boosting it even better with its antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal agents. When the immune system is good, there’s no chance of ever visiting the doctor. So when you have a flu or cold, mix a tablespoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and drink it once a day to fight colds right away.

Since turmeric contains antibacterial properties, it can also be used as disinfectant. If in any case you cut or wounded yourself, sprinkling turmeric powder in your wound promotes fast healing. It also helps in curing psoriasis and treats other inflammatory skin conditions.

Turmeric is also great in losing weight and boosts the function of liver and bile. It also helps reduce the bad cholesterol level in our body and at the same time improves our digestion.
