Veganism is a strict form of vegetarianism wherein an individual does not consume or use products with animal byproducts. There are many reasons why people turn to veganism, usually to shun the widely-accepted notion that animals are a commodity or for health reasons. Veganism is also one of the most effective methods of losing weight. In today’s post, we are listing down all the weight loss benefits of this lifestyle/diet:

Lean Protein

Protein is a critical part of a healthy diet. The body’s tissues are made up of protein. This nutrient also promotes weight loss. However, not all types of protein source are created equal. Meat-based proteins – such as beef, pork, veal, and poultry – contain more saturated fats than plant-based proteins. Saturated fat clogs the arteries and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A diet high in saturated fats also increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases. Worse, animal-based proteins are also high in calories!

Plant-based proteins – such as legumes, grains, and lentils – contain minimal to zero saturated fat. They are also low in calories, making plant-based proteins ideal for weight loss. Veganism promotes the consumption of plant-based proteins instead of animal-based proteins.

High in Fiber

A study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that vegan or vegetarian diet promotes more weight loss than any other diet plans. The same study reported that those who did not eat meat lost more weight as opposed to those who are meat-eaters. The research reviewed 12 studies that chronicled different trials involving more than 1,150 participants. For 18 weeks, the participants were observed and their diets were recorded for measure. Those who followed a plant-based diet lost four more pounds on average than those who observed a meat-based diet.

Researchers noted that the consumption of high fiber foods is one of the reasons why veganism is such an effective weight loss diet. Because high fiber foods are slow burning, vegans are more satisfied and satiated with their meals. The fiber in fruits and vegetables prolong the feeling of fullness. In addition, people who eat meat-heavy meals tend to experience bloating, gas, and flatulence.

Zero Processed Foods

Traditional veganism eliminates processed foods in a person’s diet. The program is based on consuming organically produced fruits, grains, and vegetables. The program discourages the consumption of unhealthy, processed foods teeming with preservatives and artificial colorants. When you go organic and you eat fresh, you get all the nutrients your body needs for optimal health without the excessive sugars, fats, or chemicals.

Studies show that processed foods contain more fat, salt, and sugar than whole foods. Eliminating processed foods in your diet is one of the most effective ways to shed unwanted weight. Although going vegan is not a quick fix to shed weight, it does promote healthy eating, which leads to a slimmer physique.

Low Calorie, Nutrient Dense

Going green means eating fresh organically raised produce that are high in nutrients and low in calories. Because the foods you eat are not flavored or seasoned with fattening ingredients, you lose weight gradually.
