What is Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is basically describing a specific mix of dietary food ingredients. The word or term ‘Mediterranean’ refers to where this diet originated from. This diet is consists a mix of fruits and vegetables which gives the body the maximum amount of vitamins and minerals that it needs. As what the many people of the Mediterranean use, this diet uses healthy alternatives to salt by using herbs to give each meal the best tastes. However, Mediterranean diet or cuisines may vary from regions but they are largely based on vegetables, beans, whole grains, fruits, fish, olive oils and the likes. This diet has also been associated with good health, healthier heart, a longer lifespan and of course, maintaining one’s weight.

According to studies, the Mediterranean diet is known to help lower the risks of heart attacks and other heart diseases. A Mediterranean diet can be made by eating more bread and pasta, fruits, vegetables, fish and the likes. This diet is basically about eating the foods needed for a balanced and healthy diet.

What makes Mediterranean diet great?

Unlike other kinds of diets, Mediterranean diet is not a list of food superfoods to eat. It is does not tell what food you should not eat either but it does help you create a good meal plan each day and for the long term. In fact it teaches you to maximize your vegetable consumption, limiting your red meat intake by increasing your fish and poultry as healthy alternatives. It also teaches you to use monounsaturated oil rather than your usual cooking oil or butter which comes from animal fat. Mediterranean diet also limits your intake of fast foods or instant meals. It also teaches you to the value of drinking wine, water and even limiting your salt consumption.

Over all, Mediterranean diet teaches you to eat a well and balanced diet without rigidly restricting you from what you can and cannot eat. It teaches you to pick the right kind of foods to meet the needed vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your body needs.

Keep in mind that not all diets are effective or applicable to everyone. If you want to try this diet but is allergic to fish, poultry, whole grains and the likes, it is recommended to talk to your physician first. This way you can know for sure if this diet is applicable to you so you can find another option to take. Good luck!
