Who Should Try a Liquid Diet?

Note that a liquid diet is one of the most restrictive diet programs out there. It will promote rapid weight loss but at a cost. Because it’s not nutritionally sound, adopting a liquid diet for long-term will lead to nutrition deficiencies. That’s why most liquid diets only last for three to ten days. You have to be healthy before trying this diet program. We recommend consulting your doctor first before starting a liquid diet.

Morbidly obese individuals are the best candidates for a liquid diet. Usually, two meals will be replaced with liquids. Those who need to lose weight for an event can also try a three day liquid diet. Of all liquid diet programs, the three day diet is the safest.

How Liquid Diet Works

Drinking more liquids will force the body to burn more calories. You could lose three to four pounds each week. Start by gradually minimizing solid foods from your diet for three days. This will ease your body into the next transition of consuming nothing but liquids.

On the third day, start replacing two meals with liquids. Liquids could be anything from lemonade spiked with cayenne pepper or fruit juices. To make this work, always keep track of the drink’s caloric content. Ideally, you have to opt for fruit and vegetable juices that are low in calories.

When the body is not getting sufficient nutrients from the liquids, it will force itself to burn off calories for energy. Once you become accustomed to the liquid diet, you can try exercising 30 minutes per day, six days a week. Nothing too strenuous though. We recommend walking or wall pushups to start. Those who stuck to the program will see immediate results within several days.

In patients who are on a medically supervised liquid diets, their blood tests show a significant reduction of blood sugars, blood lipids, and blood pressure.

Are Liquid Diet Programs Effective?

Initially, yes it is effective. But eventually, you will gain all the weight you lost while you were in the program. That’s because most of the weight you lost are water weight. Water weight goes back once you go back to your usual eating habits. As such, liquid diets do not offer long-term solutions for weight gain.

Also, let’s not forget the consequences of going into any restrictive diet program. People who lose weight rapidly will develop cardiac problems. In fact, liquid protein diets are linked to cardiac arrhythmias. In addition, diabetics who go on an unsupervised liquid diet could suffer from unstable blood sugar levels. And this could trigger various complications tied with diabetes.

There are so many liquid diets out there, but none of them will tell consumers that the body becomes more vulnerable to diseases and infections if they stuck to these programs.  In short, liquid diets will weaken the immune system and this could lead to serious health problems.
