In the 90s, Kate Moss singlehandedly changed the fashion industry by coining (and embodying) the term “heroin chic.” The concept behind it is to look as unhealthy as possible (rain-thin, sunken eyes, protruding cheekbones). Fast forward today, the emancipated look is still trendy in Hollywood. But thanks to infamous personalities like Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Lopez, the rubenesque figure is making a comeback. But still, from TV ads to menus with caloric content, we live in a weight-obsessed society.

The weight loss industry itself is a billion dollar market. Diet pills, supplements, and gimmicky tools are being pushed to promote weight loss. People lose and gain weight for different reasons. There are those who lose weight to gain confidence, some have no choice but to maintain normal weight.

Which brings us to the question: is weight loss really necessary or is it a marketing concept pushed by companies that sell weight loss products?  There’s more to losing weight than looking good or feeling confident. In today’s post, we are listing down the advantages and disadvantages of losing weight:

Weight Loss Advantages

Feel Lighter, Healthier

Most people try to lose weight in order to improve mobility. This is true especially for morbidly obese individuals whose weight caused them to be bedridden. The constant movement followed by a sensible diet plan is a healthy step towards feeling lighter, healthier.

People who move a total of 4 hours over the course of 3 to 4 days have leaner midsections, this according to a French study. Researchers concluded that it doesn’t matter how long you work out, you will lose weight as long as you sustain the movement.

To Leave Positive Impression

The majority of people who are overweight or obese have low self-esteem. They see weight loss as key towards feeling better about themselves. To a certain extent, weight loss boosts confidence. Looking good leads to a positive impression. That’s why some people lose weight to look great during job interviews. However, weight loss doesn’t automatically translate to success. You take care of yourself because you want to be healthy, not because you have to bag a job.

Improve Sexual Satisfaction

Studies show that overweight men have comparable testosterone level to decade older men. It’s a scientific fact that leaner individuals enjoy more sex not because they look good, but because the reproductive system works better when the body is within the normal weight range. Health conscious individuals are also 25 times more satisfied about their sex life than obese individuals are.

Weight Loss Disadvantages

Unhealthy Diet Plans and Processes

Dieting and exercising are easy to overdo especially if you are seeing results. Unfortunately, some types of rapid weight loss diets sound too good to be true. The majority of them cause nutritional deficiencies, health problems, and low metabolic rate. Too much exercising leads to injuries and a distorted perception of the physical self.

Ineffective Weight Loss Plans

Simply put, some diet programs and exercises aren’t that effective in losing weight. Working out for two hours in the gym doesn’t mean you won’t gain weight if you eat calorific foods. Some diet programs are downright unhealthy and dangerous to the health. They lead to health problems instead of making you healthy. If you want to lose weight healthily, you have to develop the right diet and exercise program.
