Managing Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms Naturally

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the colon and rectum. This condition is considered as an autoimmune disease because it involves a hyperactive immune system attacking its own tissues. Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include severe abdominal pains, diarrhea, and rectal hemorrhage. Abdominal pain is caused by sores in the inner lining of the large intestines. Ulcerative colitis has no known cause and cure. However, there are many ways to manage the disease apart from taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs:

Olive Oil

Olive oil is traditionally used to treat ulcerative colitis. It works by healing the intestinal walls, cutting down the inflammation and infection. Olive oil is packed with immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also loaded with essential fatty acids that minimize pain and inflammation. To use olive oil to treat ulcerative colitis, simply take two to three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil every day.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains soothing botanicals that heal painful intestinal ulcers. Aloe vera gel also contains anti-inflammatory properties that ease mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. To use aloe vera gel to soothe ulcerative colitis symptoms, take two ounces of the gel each time you feel a flare-up coming.

You can also drink fresh aloe vera juice several times daily followed by a glass of water to heal intestinal sores.

Wheat Grass Juice

Wheat grass juice is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. This juice is an effective treatment for most types of bowel disease including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In fact, wheat grass juice is a great remedy for chronic ulcerative colitis. To use wheat grass juice to treat this condition, drink four teaspoons of the juice daily. Gradually, increase your dosage up to 3.5 ounces per day.

Essential Fatty Acids

Did you know fish oils are an effective remedy against ulcerative colitis? Essential fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid that can minimize pain and inflammation. These compounds will ease the symptoms of chronic ulcerative colitis.

A Boston University Medical Center study found that patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders have abnormal essential fatty acid profiles. Correcting a patient’s abnormal essential fatty acid profile can eliminate certain types of gastrointestinal problems. Taking a gram of fish oil supplement daily helps minimize an ulcerative colitis attack. However, you want to increase the dosage to two to four grams to achieve the best result.

Psyllium Seeds

The lack of fiber can aggravate ulcerative colitis. Because stool becomes harder to expel, the colon works harder to eliminate it from the body. And when this happens, the intestinal sores become even more inflamed.

A high fiber diet is a great way to ease abdominal pains caused by ulcerative colitis. Soluble fiber from psyllium husks bulks up the stool. This promotes gut mobility. Fiber regulates bowel movement, prevents toxin buildups and relieves mild-to-moderate diarrhea.

To use psyllium seeds to relieve ulcerative colitis, take ½ teaspoon each day. Gradually increase the dosage to boost the effects of fiber in the gut. Of course, make sure to drink more than 8 glasses of water daily to prevent constipation. However, stop taking psyllium seeds if you experienced abdominal spasms.
