Scalp acne is caused by acne, a skin condition that affects the hair follicles of the face, chest, back, and scalp. This condition is caused by the overstimulation of sebum glands, which are underneath each hair follicle. When the sebum glands generate excessive oil, dirt, grime and bacteria start blocking the hair follicles. And when this occurs, the hair follicles become inflamed, causing acne. Acne can be caused by a lot of things – usually genetics, stress, puberty, and certain drugs. And if you are suffering from pesky scalp acne, we’ve put together a list of natural and medical treatments to ease inflammation and reduce the risk of an acne breakout:

Natural Remedies for Scalp Acne

Tomato Juice

Tomato juice helps rebalance the scalp’s natural pH. It also contains natural salicylic acid that will dry up painful cystic acne in no time at all. Studies show that salicylic-based treatments are the most effective of all acne treatments. Even better, tomato juice also stimulates hair growth and boost shine. To use tomato juice as a scalp acne treatment, saturate a cotton ball with the liquid. Dab the affected area with tomato juice and leave on for 30 minutes. Then, wet hair and rinse with a mild shampoo.

In some cases, acne breakout is caused by bacterial infection. Good thing garlic is packed with antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Even better, garlic is also teeming with antioxidants and essential nutrients that promote faster healing. To use garlic as a scalp acne treatment, peel four whole cloves of garlic and boil it in water for 15 minutes. Let the solution steep and then use it as a hair rinse. Do this twice per week for best results!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse, makes an excellent home remedy for scalp acne. It restores the scalp’s natural pH so the oil glands do not produce excessive sebum. The nutrients in apple cider vinegar also soothe and heal inflamed skin. As an added bonus, apple cider vinegar also boost shine and strengthens the hair strands!

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is traditionally used to treat pimples from occasional and hormonal breakouts as well as acne. This essential oil is teeming with potent anti-inflammatory compounds. It helps reduce inflammation, kill bacteria and soothes painful cystic acne on the face and scalp. To use tea tree oil as a treatment for scalp acne, apply an ice cube over the affected area. Then, apply the essential oil directly on the affected area. Leave on for at least 7 minutes then rinse with mild shampoo.

Medications for Scalp Acne

For persistent or progressive acne, use special shampoos and ointment fortified with salicylic acid. You can also take oral medication if the acne no longer responds to topical treatments. In case of infection, take either topical or oral antibiotics to bring the inflammation down. In severe cases of scalp acne, use Isotretinoin. Although effective in treating scalp acne, Isotretinoin does have unwanted side effects. This drug is recommended only for long-term use.
