Diabetics are at a higher risk for heart disease than the average population. In fact, diabetic heart disease is the most common cause of death among people with diabetes. The risk of dying of heart disease is up to four times higher in those with diabetes – compared to the average population. Could there be a natural way to prevent heart complications in diabetics? A new study shows that garlic oil could have benefits for preventing diabetic heart disease.

Diabetics are predisposed to a syndrome called cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle doesn’t pump as well as it should. Many cases of diabetic cardiomyopathy eventually progress to heart failure, which carries with it a high mortality. This condition occurs when the heart cells become fibrotic or hardened, due to prolonged high blood sugar levels. Is there a natural way to prevent this unfortunate sequence of events?

In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers found after giving diabetics rats a garlic oil supplement, their heart cells showed changes that protected them against diabetic cardiomyopathy. Good news for rats that have diabetes – and, hopefully, humans too.

It’s not surprising that garlic and garlic oil might be protective against heart disease in diabetics. Some studies show it helps to prevent heart disease in non-diabetics too – by lowering cholesterol levels and preventing platelet aggregation, a condition which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Some studies show it also helps to prevent plaque formation in the walls of the arteries that supply the heart with blood. It also lowers blood pressure levels, which is another heart-healthy benefit this powerful spice offers.

Oil of Garlic for Preventing Diabetic Heart Disease: The Bottom Line?

Whether garlic oil prevents diabetic heart disease in humans still needs to be explored, but this preliminary animal study looks promising. Regardless, garlic and oil of garlic have heart-healthy benefits. Eat more of this odiferous spice, but talk to your doctor first if you’re on blood thinners since garlic can enhance their action.
