In Ayurvedic medicine, certain combinations of herbs and spices are used to treat a wide variety of health problems. And perhaps one of the most often-used remedies in Ayurveda is triphala.

Triphala is a combination of two Sanskrit words: Tri, which means three and Phala, which means fruit. In literal terms, triphala means “three fruits in one.” This remedy is comprised of dried or powdered leaves of Indian gooseberry or amla, Bahera or bastard myrobala, and Terminalia chebula or harad.

Indian gooseberry is a popular herbal fruit that’s mixed in poultices and various tonics. Bahera, which is a type of tree, is prized for its many medicinal benefits while harad is a nut-like fruit with powerful antimicrobial and antiviral properties. When combined in one preparation, these herbs are sold as triphala.

The Benefits of Triphala

Reduces Digestive Disorders

From indigestion to stomach cramps, triphala relieves all types of minor digestive problems. The herbs are used to stimulate bowel movement to purify the colon. Usually, patients are given a spoonful of triphala before retiring to bed to cure constipation. You can also take a spoonful of triphala in the morning on an empty stomach to relieve flatulence and bloating. According to Ayurvedic practitioners, triphala can also strengthen the rectal muscles.

Detoxify the Intestines and Skin

Triphala is also traditionally used to purge the colon and the skin. That’s because the herbs used in triphala are effective detoxifiers. Toxic buildup in the large intestines can lead to a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. Taking triphala daily should help purge the colon and remove toxins safely from the body.

The same thing goes for the skin. Bad skin is a clear indication of toxic buildup in the body. Blocked pores cause breakouts, blemishes, and lackluster skin. Triphala helps clear the pores and condition the skin. Taking triphala daily helps keep the skin clear, smooth and pimple-free!

Restores Healthy Vision

As we age, our vision becomes less sharp. Triphala restores healthy vision because the preparation contains a concentrated level of nutrients. Just mix and soak about half a teaspoon of triphala in warm water. Leave the mixture to steep overnight. Strain the mixture in the morning and use the liquid as an eye wash. This remedy should keep the vision sharp while staving off eye infections.

Boosts Circulation

Did you know triphala has the unique ability to purify the blood and boost circulation? Triphala works by increasing the movement of the capillaries. The herbs also contain a type of flavonoid that keeps the blood healthy.

Strengthens the Immune System

Triphala contains a potent mix of antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal compounds. Together, these compounds strengthen the immune system, making you less vulnerable to common infections. When the immune system is healthy, the body is able to fight off viruses and bacteria. Even better, triphala contains high levels of vitamins and minerals. These nutrients contribute in strengthening the immune system too!

Protects from Inflammation

Studies show that inflammation is the precursor to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Taking triphala helps protect the body from internal and external inflammation. Because triphala also strengthens the immune system, the body is more likely to fight off pathogens that could trigger inflammation.
