And of all products, the fragrances line is the most popular. In fact, the Chanel brand is legendary in the perfume industry thanks to its most iconic scent, Chanel No. 5. Whether as a gift or a personal treat, a bottle of Chanel perfume makes an ideal gift! To familiarize yourself with the many fragrances by Chanel, check out list below:
The most iconic of all Chanel perfume and the most recognizable of all scents in the perfume industry is Chanel N°5. Unmatched in popularity, Chanel N°5 was the first perfume developed by Coco Chanel herself and was released in 1921.
In the 20s, perfumes adhered to two basic categories: scents made with a single note worn by respectable women and musky or jasmine scents worn by courtesans, Demi-monde, and prostitutes.
Coco Chanel revolutionized the perfume industry forever by developing a scent that represents the liberated spirit of the flapper era. Coco Chanel worked with renowned perfumer, Ernest Beaux and made history. Chanel N°5 is a beautiful medley of bergamot, lemon, neroli and ylang-ylang, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, and patchouli. The result is a feminine, classic scent that stood the test of time.
Chanel N°19 is a special scent formulated to commemorate Coco Chanel’s birthday, which is August 19. Perfumer Henri Robert formulated the scent and was released in 1971.
Chanel N°19 is seen as a complete departure from Chanel N°5. Unlike Chanel N°5, Chanel N°19 is a floral, musky, “green” scent that’s suitable for everyday wear. Chanel N°19’s notes include galbanum, neroli, bergamot, jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, iris, vetiver, sandalwood, leather, and musk. The scent was described as a “unique blend of light-heartedness and sophistication.”
Coco Mademoiselle is a contemporary perfume developed by Jacques Polge, the French couture house’s perfumer since 1978. The scent is meant to cater to younger Chanel fans.
Coco Mademoiselle was launched through a fabulous commercial featuring Keira Knightley as Coco Chanel. English BAFTA-winning director Joe Wright, director of Knightley starrers Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, directed the commercial.
Coco Mademoiselle features base notes of Indonesian patchouli, Haitian vetiver, Bourbon vanilla, white musk, opoponax, tonka bean. The top notes are a sparkling combination of orange, bergamot, mandarin, Tunisian curacao. Coco Mademoiselle is a modern, playful scent that’s perfect for special occasions.
Chanel Chance is another scent made specifically for the younger Chanel fans. Chance is the only Chanel perfume housed in a round bottle. Chanel Chance was developed by Jacques Polge and launched in 2002.
In French, Chance (which means “luck”) sounds so similar to Chanel that’s why the scent is named so. The design of the bottle was meant to represent the “wheel of fortune.” Chanel Chance brings together an alluring composition of patchouli, musk, vetiver, orris, vanilla, and jasmine base notes and pink pepper, lemon and pineapple as top notes. The perfume was described as, “Chance is a tornado… the door open to adventure and unknown, just like lips ready for a kiss.”
