The kind of food you eat could affect how your body works. For instance, if you keep eating refined carbs, you become susceptible to obesity, diabetes, and cancer.  On the other hand, if you eat a balanced diet, you cut the risk of developing these diseases. In ancient Chinese medicine, food contains powerful healing properties. Eating these foods will ease symptoms associated with various ailments.

The changing season offers an opportunity to try a variety of produce that’s only available during that season. If you are taking a holistic approach to maintaining your health, then seasonal foods should give your diet natural variety. Spring Season

This season is best to eat light, delicate foods that warm the body. These foods include naturally sweet vegetables like celeries, root crops, and bamboo shoots. The sweetness of these veggies does not come from unhealthy or artificial sources. Certain types of “pungent” produce – like garlic, onions or rosemary – are recommended. According to traditional Chinese medicine, pungent foods help the body absorb positive energy.

When it comes to cooking, try not to overcook the veggies. The same thing goes for eating raw veggies and fruits. Raw food will fail to warm up the body. The body will also struggle to absorb the nutrients from raw foods. According to Chinese medical principle, raw foods take much longer to digest.

Summer Season

When the climate warms up, the Qi energy is at its most dominant. As such, eating during the summer should involve “cooling” foods. These foods dissipate body heat and boost the absorption of qi. During the summer season, load up on tomatoes, tofu, cucumber and sprouts. You can also nosh on more salads, and drink leaf teas! As for fruits, eat more apples, lemons, and watermelons. These foods will lower the body heat and aid in digestion.

As for herbs and spices, eat more chilies, fresh ginger, and black pepper. These spices will cool the body by promoting perspiration. Generally, you want to hydrate yourself to combat the warmer weather. Drinking more water also helps bring back the depleted body oils you lost as you sweat.

Fall Season

During the fall season, the air becomes dry and cold. During this season, you want to load up on food that will hydrate the body. These foods include eggs, pork, shellfish and sesame seeds. You can also eat pineapples and pears. These foods help retain moisture according to Traditional Chinese medicine.

During the autumn season, try to minimize your consumption of pungent foods like garlic or chilies. These foods could dehydrate the body from the inside. In addition, you want to eat sour fruits to help the body absorb positive energy. These foods include olives, grapes, and apples.

As for cooking, you want to turn to slow cooking instead of using high heat. This helps prevent the loss of liquids in the food. It also boosts the energy needed by the body.

Winter Season

During winter season, eat seasonal foods that will warm you from the inside while cools the skin. If you’re sensitive to the cold, start eating heartier foods like whole grains, nut, and dried foods. You can also eat soups made from fish or organ meats. Increase your consumption of seaweeds, salt-cured foods and miso to retain warmth all winter long.
