What is kale?

Kale is a dark green, leafy vegetable that comes from the cabbage family. It is considered to be a close relative to the wild cabbage than other forms of cabbages. There are many types of kale; some can be curly, flat or bluish to purplish in color mixed with green. They also taste different so it’s great to try all of them. Kale contains 3 grams of protein and 2.5 grams of fiber. It is also loaded with Vitamins A, C and K as well as folate and Vitamin B which is essential in brain development. It also contains alpha-linolenic acid which is an omega 3 fatty acid. Nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin can also be found in this vegetable which helps in protecting against macular degeneration and cataracts. It also contains potassium, zinc, calcium and phosphorus.


Kale is high in fiber and has zero fat which makes it great for digestion and elimination of toxins in the body. It is also high in protein and iron; in fact, kale contains more iron than beef which helps in transporting oxygen to different parts of the body. Since kale is high in Vitamin K, it helps in protecting the body from various forms of cancer. It also promotes normal bone health and blood clotting and prevents people from having Alzheimer’s disease. It is also a good source of antioxidants like carotenoids and flavonoids which again, helps in protecting you from various forms of cancer.

A cup of kale contains about 10% of the recommended diet of omega 3 fatty acids which helps fight against arthritis, asthma and other autoimmune disorders. It also helps lower the cholesterol levels as well as strengthening the heart. Kale is also great for your skin and eyesight. It also helps prevent lung and oral cavities. It helps in increasing the strength of your immune system as well as your metabolism and hydration. Since kale is high in calcium, it definitely aids in preventing bone loss and maintains the flexibility of your joints and cartilages. Most of all, kale is rich in fiber and sulfur which is great in detoxifying your body and at the same time helps keep your liver clean and healthy.

Kales can be classified in many types. It could be curly-leave or what they call as Scots kale, plain-leaved, rape kale, leaf and spear and the Cavolo nero which is also known as the black cabbage. So you can try all types and still benefit the same results. If you haven’t tried eating kale then this is the best time to do so! However if you don’t like eating them raw, you can also add them in your juice. This wonderful vegetable has all the nutrients and minerals you need so go ahead and give it a try.
