Herbalife is an American company that develops market and sells nutrition and weight loss supplements, sports nutrition as well as personal care products. Entrepreneur Mark Hughes founded the company in Los Angeles in 1980. Today, Herbalife is based in the Cayman Islands and distributes its products in 95 countries.

The Herbalife Weight Loss Program

The Herbalife weight loss program is comprised of protein shakes, nutrition bars, fitness supplements and energizing teas. Just like most diet programs, Herbalife replaces certain meals with its own protein shakes to induce weight loss. The protein shake, which is the first product Herbalife ever manufactured, is made of soy-based ingredients. An average meal starts off with a protein shake and a serving of fruit. Lunch and dinner feature a low-calorie serving of lean meat and carbohydrates while the snacks are comprised of protein shake or a serving of fresh fruits.

Advantages of the Herbalife Diet Program

Herbalife diet is one of the longstanding diet programs in the market. It remained unchanged since it was launched in the late 80s. Below are the advantages of sticking to a Herbalife meal plan:

Easy to Follow Program

Although dieters are required to replace meals with protein shakes, fresh fruits, and supplements, the program itself is easy to follow. Apart from the supplements, the replacement meals are very easy to prepare because they require no special ingredients.

Great Variety

In terms of flavors, Herbalife offers a great range of protein shake and tea flavors. The protein shake is available in Vanilla and Chocolate while the teas come in wider flavor selection such as green tea, orange, raspberry, and peach. There’s also a special variant made specifically for diabetics.

Effective Calorie Control

Herbalife is all about controlling the calorie consumption and the meals are filling, but they are low in calories. Together with the teas, the meal plan reduces a dieter’s calorie consumption painlessly.

Easy to Prepare

Because the protein shakes and teas can be prepared anywhere and require no special ingredients, the meal plan itself is very practical. You can take a packet of the tea or a serving of the protein shake with you while on the go.

Disadvantages of the Herbalife Diet Program

It’s Expensive

The protein shakes, teas and the special aloe solution that induces weight loss are expensive. On top of that, you have to take several types of supplements per meal. The costs stack up quickly within just a few short weeks of dieting.

No Longer Term Health Effects

Just like any diet program, Herbalife meal plan does not guarantee long-term results. That’s because most of the weight you lost during the program is water weight. Once you go back to your normal diet, you will gain back the weight you lost.

Health Effects

In the past, Herbalife weight loss supplements are formulated with ephedrine. Ephedrine is an appetite suppressant that causes a wide range of respiratory and cardiovascular ailments. In addition, a study by doctors at the University Hospital of Bern in Switzerland found that the supplements are linked to hepatitis. The FDA has banned this chemical since 2004. In 2007, Herbalife removed ephedrine from its diet supplements.

Our Final Thoughts

Although Herbalife is one of the oldest diet programs on the market, it is not 100% safe and effective. Health experts recommend a combination of high-fiber, low-calorie diet combined with regular exercise as the best strategy for a fitter, more slender physique.
