Tips to Treat Food Poisoning

Food poisoning happens when you eat food contaminated with parasites, bacteria and other harmful substances. These contaminants can easily get in your body and cause harm. The most common causes of food poisoning come from the unsanitary handling of food or the use of kitchen utensils that are not cleaned properly. Bacteria and toxins can also accumulate food that are not refrigerated properly or cooked.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning may include diarrhea, nausea, headaches, abdominal cramps and vomiting. If you or anyone you know is suffering from this condition then you need to know the basic treatments that you should do in case this occurs. Since most food poisoning can be treated immediately, it is important that you are able to identify the symptoms and take immediate action to relieve that. In this article, we will talk just about that.

Drink lots of water. Since diarrhea is one of the many symptoms of food poisoning, it is important that you keep yourself hydrated. Vomiting may also follow so it is important that you keep yourself hydrated. Take small sips of water or suck on ice chips/cubes if you cannot fully drink large amounts of water. This way you can stay hydrated even if your body is losing fluids.

Avoid taking dairy or caffeinated drinks. This will upset your stomach even more. Make sure that you feel better first before taking anything but water. This will also lessen the recurrence of food poisoning.

Once you stopped vomiting or having diarrhea, make sure to start drinking other liquids besides water. You can take in electrolyte drinks like Gatorade or flavored water. Some people drink vitamin water and eat soup. You can do the same just make sure that what you drink will not upset your stomach. Once you feel a whole lot better, you can start eating digestible foods like crackers, toast, bananas and the likes. Don’t eat heavily right away as your stomach is still adjusting. Try eating small but frequent meals to gain back your energy.

Probiotics are also helpful. These contain good bacteria that will help you digest food better. It can also help restore the balance in your stomach and treat the symptoms that were caused by bacteria. Taking anti-diarrheal medications may seem to be a good option but this will only worsen the condition. Keep in mind that your body is getting rid of the harmful substances in your body naturally. So it is best that you let it go accordingly.

Lastly, take lots of rest. Since your body is undergoing “construction” you need to rest so you can recovery fast. Sleep it off if you can but always be on guard for other signs and symptoms.

Food poisoning can be treated immediately however if you suspect that it’s more than just a simple case of food poisoning, it is best to check yourself in the Emergency Room right away. Doing so will give you better diagnosis and help save your life in the future. It’s better to be safe than sorry, right?
