Treating and Managing Vitiligo Through Proper Diet

Vitiligo is a progressive skin disorder caused by the loss of pigment of the skin. This condition occurs when the skin’s pigment cells (melanin) are unable to function properly or die inexplicably. The result is patches of abnormally white skin on certain parts of the body that spread and grows over time. The patches of pigment-less skin also merge gradually. Scientists are unable to determine the cause of Vitiligo. Unfortunately, this condition has no known cure. However, you can treat and manage this condition through proper diet.

Eat Whole Foods

Health experts agree that treating Vitiligo starts at sticking to healthy, balanced diet. Eating the wrong combination of foods could overload the digestive tract, which affects the skin. This can lead to all sorts of skin problems, including Vitiligo.

If you are suffering from Vitiligo, you need to consume foods with balanced nutrients. You want to get your protein from lean sources and fiber from green leafy vegetables and fruits. You can also get your protein from dairy products such as skimmed milk and curd. Eating quality dairy regularly gives the body a dose of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an important nutrient that protects the skin from the sun’s damaging rays.

You want to enrich your diet with foods high in omega-3 fatty acid. This beneficial oil strengthens the immune system, prevents inflammation, and promotes better circulation. Oily fish such as tuna, salmon, herring, and sardines are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

As for fruits, always choose fruits with very vibrant color.  Green leafy vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and spinach are great for people suffering from Vitiligo.

Foods to Avoid

Processed foods are bad for the skin, more so if you suffer from Vitiligo. In fact, studies show that children that consume processed foods are at a higher risk of developing Vitiligo than those who eat whole foods. Avoid foods that are high in sugar, preservatives, synthetic flavors, and saturated oil. Eliminating fast food from your diet also lowers the risk of developing vitiligo.

It helps if you cut back on gluten because this compound causes gastrointestinal inflammation. Gluten also weakens the immune system, rendering the body unable to fight off certain diseases. Avoid acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, because these fruits can trigger an imbalance in the stomach.

Avoid vegetables that belong in the nightshade family because they cause inflammation. These veggies include eggplant, paprika, tomatoes, potatoes, and tobacco.

Boost Your Metabolic Rate

Yes, boosting your metabolic rate helps slow down the ravages of vitiligo. When the metabolic rate is slow, it takes some time before the body is able to absorb the nutrients from the food you eat. This leads to the development of various diseases, including vitiligo.

To boost your metabolic rate, do not skip breakfast. You want to start your day with a low-calorie breakfast that is filling and hearty. Eating foods high in iron also boosts the metabolic rate. Finish every meal with a cup of tea instead of drinking several cups of coffee. Detox your system once every month. You can consult your doctor to determine the right detox plan for you.

Finally, get as much exercise as you can daily. Exercising helps boost the metabolic rate and strengthen the immune system. When the body is able to fight off diseases, there is less chance of developing skin disorders like vitiligo.
