Treating and Preventing Painful, Cracked Heels

Contrary to popular belief, cracked heels are not caused by dry skin. This condition is a sign of poor foot care. Also known as heel fissures, cracked heels affect the topmost layer of the skin, the epidermis. As the skin flakes and dries out, the fissures become deeper. Eventually, the cracks will reach the dermis layer, causing pain, inflammation, and serious infections.

According to health experts, diabetics and obese or overweight individuals are the most vulnerable to this skin issue. Treating cracked heels require heavy-duty hydration.

Signs and Symptoms of Cracked Heels

The most common signs of cracked heels are flaky spots on the heels and inflammation. The heels also become red and itchy. As the condition progresses, the fissures start deepening. When this happens, the upper layer of the skin cracks, causing painful fissures. This leads to bleeding, inflammation and eventually fungal infection.

Treating Cracked Heels

Ripe Bananas

Ripe bananas are surprisingly moisturizing! They make a great remedy for very dry heels. In a clean bowl, just mash a ripe banana. Apply the mashed banana directly on clean heels and leave it on for at least 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Do this every day to soften the skin on the heels and prevent cracking.


Just like bananas, avocados make a great treatment for very dry heels and feet. In a clean bowl, mash a ripe avocado and add about half a teaspoon of coconut oil. Mix well and apply the paste on clean heels. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing. Apply this foot treatment twice or thrice per week and exfoliate the heels after every session.

Lemon Juice

Lemon extract softens the heels effectively while evening out the skin tone. The citric acid in lemon juice also promotes healing while melting dead skin cells. To treat cracked heels using lemon extracts, just apply about 2 teaspoons of lemon juice on the heels. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Follow up with a foot scrub and lotion for soft, smooth heels.


Honey is traditionally used to banish cracked heels. It draws moisture into the deep layers of the skin while killing bacteria. To use honey as a treatment for cracked heels, add about a cup of raw honey in a foot tub filled with warm water. Soak the feet for at least 15 minutes. Exfoliate the heels gently to remove dead skin cells. Finish off by applying a thick coat of foot lotion.

Extra Virgin Coconut oil

Extra virgin coconut oil doesn’t just hydrate the skin, it also prevent skin infection while speeding healing! This is an excellent remedy for severe cases of cracked heels. Just apply several drops of coconut oil on each heel and massage for at least 5 minutes. Wear a sock and leave on overnight. In the morning, gently exfoliate the skin. Do this every night until the skin heals. You can substitute olive oil for coconut oil and get the same results! For extra potency, try mixing a vitamin E capsule with coconut or olive oil.
