The head louse is a parasitic insect that lives on the human scalp. It feeds exclusively on human blood. Like fleas, head lice infestation is characterized by persistent itchiness and inflammation. Infestation is common among children. Head lice are also harmless, but it’s quite embarrassing if you have it. There are many ways to eliminate head lice, but coconut oil is the most effective natural remedy.

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that suffocate lice until they die. The oil makes it harder for lice to grip on hair strands. The critters cannot lay eggs either because the nits will not attach to oily hair strands.

When treating the scalp and hair with coconut oil, the lice are not moving as freely so they cannot escape. Apart from using coconut oil to treat head lice, it also works to repel re-infestation. There are different ways to use coconut oil to banish head lice! In today’s post, we are listing down four ways to treat head lice using coconut oil:

Coconut Oil and Garlic

Coconut oil makes the scalp inhabitable for head lice. Garlic contains antiseptic properties and strong odor that suffocates head lice.

Take at least eight cloves of fresh garlic. Peel them off and grind them to a paste. Now, take two tablespoons of coconut oil and mix both ingredients really well. Apply the mixture directly on the scalp. Make sure the scalp and hair are completely covered with the stuff. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and wash it with warm water. Do this several times per week until head lice disappear.

Coconut Oil with Lemon and Green Tea

Green tea will kill off nits while lemon extract and coconut oil suffocate fully developed lice. In a clean container, mix equal parts of green tea and lemon extract. Add a couple of tablespoon of coconut oil and mix well. Apply directly to hair and scalp and cover your head with a shower cap. Leave it on for at least an hour. Rinse off the solution with regular shampoo. Do this several times per week for better results. You can also add crushed garlic cloves to increase potency.

Coconut Oil and Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a powerful insecticide. It will kill nits and lice right on their tracks. In a clean bowl, mix three tablespoons of coconut oil, regular shampoo and a teaspoon of tea tree oil. Mix the ingredients until you get a fine solution. Now, apply this on wet hair. Cover your head with a plastic shower cap and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Wash it all off with warm water.

Coconut Oil with Oil of Oregano

Mix four tablespoon of coconut oil and a tablespoon of oregano oil in a clean bowl. Mix well until you get a fine fluid and apply to the hair and scalp. Wear a shower cap and leave it on for at least an hour. Now, comb your hair to collect all the dead lice. Rinse your hair with warm water and regular shampoo. Repeat the process until head lice disappear.

After trying out any of these natural recipes, make sure to comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb to remove dead head lice.
