Candidiasis is a type of fungal infection that affects the mouth, skin, nails, as well as the vaginal area in women. It’s caused by candida, a type of yeast. When overgrowth of candida microorganism occurs in the vagina, it’s called yeast infection. There are over 20 types of candida microbes that cause infection. Those with weak immune system, diabetics, those who received organ transplant, and children are the most vulnerable to this type of fungal infection.
Candidiasis Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of candida infection of the skin include itchy, red patchy skin with liquid oozing from the cracks. Pustules and scabs will develop along the edges of the patches. This type of infection occurs near the groin, the folds of the buttocks, and between toes, fingers, and the breasts.
On the other hand, signs of candidiasis of the fingernails include painful, red area around the fingernails. In extreme cases, the fingernails will split, exposing the yellow or white nail bed.
Oral thrush or candidiasis of the mouth has the following symptoms: white, curd-like patches on the tongue and around the palate; cracked and inflamed slip corners; and white patches inside the mouth.
Symptoms of yeast infection or candidiasis of the vagina includes thick, cottage-cheese like vaginal discharge, sharp odor, and itching or burning sensation during sex and urination.
Causes of Candidiasis
Yeast is present in the body naturally along with millions of other microorganisms inside you. But the numbers of these microbes are controlled because of beneficial bacteria in the body. However, when the body’s flora is disrupted, it could cause fungi like candida to proliferate, causing an infection. Usually, a flare-up will happen if you took excessive antibiotics. Yeast is generally not affected by antibiotics and by killing off other microbes along with good bacteria because of the drug, there is a possibility of a yeast overgrowth.
Natural Remedy for Candidiasis
Consuming plain yogurt helps you fight fire with fire. Yogurt contains millions of good bacteria. It helps promote better digestion, keeps the bones healthy, and protects the body from oxidative damage because it contains antioxidants. Yogurt also balances the microorganism flora in the body, preventing not-so-friendly microbes like candida from taking over.
Garlic contains antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidants. Placing peeled cloves of garlic on the affected area may help inhibit the spreading of the infection. Some women go as far as putting garlic cloves in their vagina to combat yeast infection.
Tea Tree Oil
Just like garlic, tea tree oil contains powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties. Just apply a couple of drops of tea tree oil on the affected area two to three times a day until symptoms disappear. If you have yeast infection, you can add a couple of drops of tea tree oil on a tampon and insert it into the vagina to treat the infection.
Black walnuts also contain high level of antifungal agents that kill candida right off its tracks. Black walnuts are so good at preventing fungal infection that they’re regarded as an ideal long-term remedy for most types of candida-related infection.
