Picking a perfume isn’t as simple as one might think. Remember, you want a perfume that truly complements your style. This means, you have to take more time getting to know different scents. Don’t just buy a perfume because it’s a trendy new scent.
Colognes and perfumes are quite pricey; you want your choice to be on point. In today’s post, we are giving you a basic guide on how to pick the right scent as well as tips on how to wear perfume and cologne the right way:
Scent is subjective. Some scents appeal to women, others appeal to men. Some people are sensitive to a specific note. Just because a friend wears a certain scent well doesn’t mean you’ll smell just as good. Perfumes and colognes interact with the body that’s why some scents smell different to others. Keep this in mind when you start searching for the right fragrance for you.
Perfumes and colognes are not made equal. Eau de parfum has the strongest concentrations of fragrance, which is about 8% to 15%. Eau de toilette has moderate concentrations of scent at 4% to 8%. Finally, eau de cologne has the lowest concentration of fragrance at 2% to 4%. Aftershave has 1% to 3% of fragrance. The product with the highest concentration of fragrance will last the longest.
Men’s fragrances are comprised of layers of “notes.” Top notes are the first ones to hit the nose. They are usually made up of zingy or citrusy scents. The middle note emerges after the top notes dissipate. The base notes will emerge within an hour or two of wear. They are comprised of richer, heavier fragrance, they last the longest too.
How to Wear Fragrance the Right Way
Try the Fragrance in Person
Do not buy perfumes online unless you are familiar with the scent. The best way to test the fragrance is to go to the counter and try it for yourself. Again, scents interact chemically with the body. You want to know how your skin affects the fragrance before you buy it.
It’s critical to store fragrances the right way. Extreme temperatures could distort the scent somehow. You want to keep your fragrances away from direct sunlight. Keep it in a cool, dry place to maintain the delicate balance of fragrances. If you can, store the perfume in its original box. This will extend the shelf life of your favorite scents! If stored correctly, perfumes could last up to five years.
Don’t Bathe in It
Nothing turns women off than a man who seemed to have doused himself in cologne. Some scents could be downright overwhelming. Dousing yourself with fragrance is a waste of product too. Don’t be too aggressive with the application, you don’t want to assault anyone with too much cologne. Spray the scent on your pulse points: on the wrist, behind the ears, on the chest, etc. Re-apply if you have dry skin. If you have oily skin, the fragrance will stay on much longer.
Best Time to Apply Fragrance
The best time to apply fragrance is right after a hot shower. The warm temperature will open up the pores, allowing the skin to absorb the product effectively. This will make your cologne stay on much longer too. Also, never use cologne to mask body odor or use it on un-showered skin. Even the nicest-smelling perfume will turn into an eye-watering assault to the senses if applied this way.
